Tanzania • Differences • Men often walk hand in hand • Greetings are lengthy (1-10 min) • They tell lengthy stories about their problems before asking for assistance • Not concerned with being punctual • If living in a village, visiting a neighbor is expected • NEVER okay to wear shorts above the knee • To call someone, have your palms down • Drinking age (18) not heavily enforced • Camouflage is illegal to wear. Commonalities • Men greet with handshake • Women shake hand or bow, • Eye contact with friends or colleagues is acceptable • Pointing at someone is considered rude • Suits are common for business men and women • Use A-F grading scale, socialize by going out

Tanzanian Etiquette • Men handshake when greeting & women handshake or bow. • Indirect communication is considered much more polite than being direct and specific, especially when talking to superiors or your elders. • Don’t be blunt when asking for things, they enjoy jokes. • Give people an arms length of personal space. • No touching or overly direct eye contact is acceptable with opposite sex. • It is expected to visit your neighbors and eat meals with them when offered. • Women who smoke, drink at bars and dress provocatively are considered prostitutes. • When gesturing for someone to come, you should face your palm downwards and make a scratching motion. Palm up is considered disrespectful. • Pointing with one finger is rude, us the entire hand. • Legal drinking age is 18. • Visitors are hassled for money.

ALGERIA Commonalities • Hand shake greeting • Eye contact is sign of respect • Rude to point finger • Differences • Avoid talking about politics, sexuality, and religious issues • Really close when they talk to each other • Touching is reserved for family or good friends • Rude to wag your finger • Drinking age is 18 • Homosexuality is illegal • Illegal to convert from Muslim to another religion

ALGERIAN ETIQUETTE • Lengthy greetings with handshake and inquiry about the other’s life • Friends and family exchange kiss on the cheek • When meeting women, not then wait to see if a hand is extended. Avoid prolonged eye contact and do not ask personal questions • Use of titles is important • It is an honor to be invited to another’s home, Algerians love hospitality and food • Remove shoes at the door of another’s home, don’t bring alcohol, dress modestly and expect for women and men to be seated separately • Only use the right hand for eating and passing dishes

SENEGAL Commonalities • Handshakes are common • Personal relationships are highly valued, don’t rush things • Eye contact is expected when meeting/talking • Lectures, group work in classes • Differences • Greetings can last more than 10 minutes • Don’t make direct requests • Men holding hands in public is a sign of friendship • Punctuality is not highly valued • School year is from October to June • 20 point system, 20 being best and 10 needed to pass • polygamous

SENEGAL ETIQUETTE • Take time to inquire about health and welfare of a person’s family members • Cross gender touch does occur • Address people by their professional or academic title • Formal table manners, do not begin eating until the eldest male does, never reach across the table, and eat only with right hand
