  1. The Outer Brain Neuroscience and Behavior

  2. Brain to Body Weight • Is the ratio of brain to body weight and accurate indicator of a species intellectual functioning? • What is an accurate indicator of an animal’s brain power? • The older brain coordinates involuntary actions.

  3. The Brainstem- basic functions

  4. Thalamus • The operator of the brain, it receives info from all of the senses EXCEPT SMELL. It then routes that information to the appropriate part of the brain.

  5. Hypothalamus • Controls maintenance functions like eating. It also helps the Pituitary gland run the Endocrine System

  6. The Midbrain • A relay station for auditory and visual information

  7. Reticular Formation • Starts in the spine and ends at the Thalamus • The reticular formation helps information from the spine reach the Thalamus • It is also involved in arousal

  8. Pons • Involved in autonomic functions, movement, and sleep

  9. Medulla • The slight swell at the top of the brainstem • Controls heartbeat and breathing

  10. Outer brain parts • Cerebellum • Also known as the little brain • Coordinates voluntary movement • Cerebral Cortex • A surface of interconnected neural networks • The more creases and folds the more information processing ability we have • Glial cells- provide myelin

  11. Outer Brain parts • The lobes of the brain
