Transitions Math Strategies And Transitions strategies Tara Tiller came to Fentress Co. May 11, 2011 and shared math strategies. Our administration team, instructional coaches and teachers attended the MODEL SCHOOLS conference June 26 -30, 2011 where we participated in various sessions and gathered this information.
Transitional Ideas K-2 grades (line up using these) Count out loud (whisper count by 1’s, 5’s, 10’s, 2’s, 3’s, etc.) Ordinal Numbers (line up by these and then whisper count up to assigned #) Even, Odd (have odd or even line up then count by …1,3,5,7,9 and look for patterns – the one in 11, 21, 31, etc.) Days of the Week, shape and number identification Ten Less ( give a number, they tell the # that is ten less, ten more) Addition/Subtraction facts 3-5 grades Addition/Subtraction facts Multiplication/Division facts Locate and identify line relationships Angles, geometry, etc. 6-8 grades Divisibility Patterns (ends in even number means divisible by 2) Review Formulas (geometric shapes, etc.) Apply to Real Life (slope, gallons, geometry, meters, etc.)
Math Tidbits (from Tara Tiller, Ms. Math, and Math Talks) Examples of these are available for you • Spiraling (Bell Ringers/Homework) past, present, future • Numbers of the Day • Ex. 3, 7 are the numbers for today: • K-2 makes groups for the individual digits • 3-8 multiplication, fractions, mixed numbers, etc. • Answer a problem in 10 different ways to prove • if it is correct/wrong • Fist on chest (closed fist = working on a strategy, • 1 finger from fist = 1 strategy, • 2 fingers from fist = 2 strategies
