Math Strategies Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Session Purpose… • Give you research that supports children’s acquisition of math concepts • Activities/games to use with children in large and small groups • Web sites • Blackline masters • Accessible materials…dice, dominoes, counters, number cards, deck of cards Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Guiding Principles for Teaching…. • Inquiry based approach • Teaching is informed • Initial assessment and ongoing assessments • Focused just beyond the child’s current knowledge • Uses instructional settings and tasks • Assess-intervene-observe cycle is continuous • Child is involved in sustained thinking and reflection on thinking and results • Students gain intrinsic satisfaction from problem-solving and their progress • Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Teaching & Learning Cycle Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Early Number Concepts Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Early Number Learning • Number Word Sequences to 10 – Forward and Backward • Number Word Sequences to 30 – Forward and Backward • Number Word Sequences to 100 – Forward and Backward • Number Word Sequences to 1,000 – and beyond • Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Activities to Strengthen Children’s knowledge • Number line activities • Count on • Count back • Number comes before and after strategies Online Activities • http://www.abc.net.au/countusin/default.htm • http://www.primarygames.com/math/fishycount/index.htm Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Early Number Learning • Structuring numbers 1-100 – Using Jump Strategies • Structuring numbers 1-100 – Using Jump, Split, and other Strategies • Mental Computation involving addition and subtraction with 2- and 3-digit numbers Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Counting Activities • Great to use as a warm up activity with students in a large group or pull out situations. • Fish out of Water • Who has? • Number cards for sequencing & missing number games • Hundreds chart – numbers handout provided • Concentration Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Number Words and Numerals Developing facility with number word sequences and learning to name numerals are important aspects of early numeracy acquisition. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Overview • Numbers are ideas or concepts • Number words are the names for numbers • Digits are the ten basic symbols in the numerations system. The digits are 0, 1, 2,…9. • Numerals are the written symbols for numbers, for example, 27, 346, 8. The ten digits from 0 to 9 can be referred to as numerals. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Assessment Tasks • Forward number word sequences – FNWS • Number word after • Backward number word sequences – BNWS • Number word before • Numeral identification • Numeral recognition • Sequencing numerals • Ordering numerals • Locating numbers in the range 1-100 Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Examples • FNWS: Say: Start counting from one please. I will tell you when to stop. Stop the child at 32. Start counting from 47 please. Stop the child at 55. And so on • Number word after: Say I am going to say a number and I would like you to say the number that comes after the number I say. What comes after six? After 11? And so on. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Games and Activities Web based and Blackline Masters Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Face Off Materials: 24 math manipulatives, two strips of paper with 12 boxes numbered 1 to 12, and two dice (one set of materials for each pair). • A pair of students is given the materials listed above. • Students place a math manipulative in each box on their strip of paper. • Player one rolls the dice and adds the total then removes the manipulative in the appropriate box. • Player two rolls the dice and does the same. • Play continues until one player is able to remove all manipulatives. • A variation would be to place 5 manipulatives in boxes 1 to 5 and then subtract after each roll. • See worksheets for patterns Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Name That Number Upper Elementary Grades Materials: 20 – 3x5 index cards numbered 1 to 20 (one set for each pair). • Each pair of students is given one set of cards. • They lay down five cards face down and then turn them over. • Now they select the highest number, which becomes their target number. • Next they try to make as many math expressions as they can that equals the target number. • They get one point for every number they use in the expression. • A variation would be to use only one operation at time, such as addition, subtraction, etc. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Integer Challenge Materials: 50 - 3x5 index cards with positive and negative integers written on them (50 cards for each pair). • A pair of students is given 25 cards each. • Both players turn over two cards. • They add the total for each player and the winner keeps all four cards. • They continue play until one player collects all cards. • A variation would be to subtract integers, instead of adding. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Snakes and Numbers • Counting Game • Spin off of Chutes and Ladders • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime/games/index.shtml • Can play with a partner or alone Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Dominoes • http://www.mathwire.com/strategies/matsdom.html • Designs on Dominoes by Linda Underwood • Unusual twist to the game of dominoes • Colored master of the dominoes you can cut and laminate if you want to use as cards • Game #9 • Unfortunately not available anymore. Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Dice Games • Addition and Subtraction with 2 dice • Place value with 3 different colors of dice • Black-line masters attached Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
Card Games • Buy, collect or gather decks of playing cards. • Take out the Jacks, Queens, and Kings • Addition War • Subtraction War • Go Fish Pat Bruinsma, ESA2
