Group 4 Digital archiving
Experience by Universities • Universities of Warsaw, Rome la Sapienza, Helsinki and Brussels • Warsaw: all the libraries use the same software dLibra made in Poland , it makes possible for libraries to check what material has already been digitised, only the National Library use other software and makes no announcement of which material has been digitised • Priorities: special collections and students leaning materials
Experiences by Universities • Helsinki thesis repository about 10 years • Nowadays 80 % from PhD thesis published on the web, MA thesis under planning • Abstracts mandatory publishing on the web • Textbook articles (about 10 years) • Research data recently • National Digital Library program by the Min of Education • Cultural heritage program by National Library • Needs of Scientific community are different
Experiences by Universities • Rome: large investments during last 10 years for digital library • Committee on central level
Collaboration to enhance access Group 4
Non-profit collaboration • How to be sure that there will be sustainable funding for the future with growing digital collection (digital curation, access) - a threath
Public/ private partnerships • Google • Ghent was first a French speaking university • Profitable for the university when getting the work and technology from Google • How the preservation has arranged, can we rely on the future access
Service provision • Are the digitised collections by Google open or restricted in the future? • What kind of restrictions it will make for the future collaboration with third partners and research purposes?
OA issues • The University leadership has to support or even make OA publishing mandatory on the university level • E.g. University of Helsinki will mandate scholars to publish in the OA-journals or in the institutional repository • The process of OA publishing has to be easy and rewarding for the scholars
