Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Ethical Conduct • Honesty and sportsmanship are vital, especially if you are ever questioned in an NCAA investigation • You are not allowed to wager in any manner (cash, prizes or services) on any professional, collegiate or amateur sporting event in a sport that the NCAA sponsors • This includes Fantasy Football and March Madness Bracket Contests!!! • Also, you cannot bet on any games/activities you yourself take part in!!!

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Ethical Conduct - Gambling • Permissible gambling activities: • You can take part in activities that have no entry fee • You can play the lottery • You can bet on horse racing • You can go to a casino and play any game there (except for a sports book) • When in doubt, ask first

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Amateurism • You must be an amateur (i.e., never been paid for your performance in your sport, or agreed – either in writing or orally – to sign with an agent/become a professional at some point in the future) • You also cannot use your status as a student-athlete to promote any activities – even if they are for charity/a class assignment – without checking with me first to see if it is acceptable

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Seasons of Competition • You get 4 seasons of competition in each sport you participate in, and 10 semesters to use them in • Playing in just one contest/only one play uses one entire season of competition • New exception for true freshmen  preseason contests • For transfers, seasons of competition follow you from school-to-school • It is possible to use a season-of-competition in one sport in a given year, but not another one (i.e., running in cross country/redshirting in track)

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Financial Aid • You can receive money to pay for school through an athletic scholarship, anything through our Financial Aid office, other WSC departmental scholarships, your family, a job, or a legitimate outside scholarship • You cannot receive money/meals/services/other benefits directly from boosters or agents (such as clothing, tattoos, etc.); if you do, you are risking your permanent eligibility • Also, you must be eligible to compete to travel with the team in any capacity; otherwise, “extra benefit”

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Financial Aid • Athletic Scholarships are renewable on a year-to-year basis only • During a year, a scholarship can be cancelled/reduced if one of the following occur: • Become ineligible for competition • Fraudulently misrepresent information to WSC • Engage in serious misconduct that warrants penalties • Voluntary quit the team • Other team/athletic department policies that formally exist prior to the scholarship being offered to you

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Academic Standards: Credit Hours • If you think in multiples of 6, you will be fine • 6 – The number of credit hours you must pass each semester (fall or spring terms only) that meet Progress-Towards-Degree (PTD) requirements to be allowed to compete the next semester • 12 – The number of credit hours you must be enrolled in each term in order to be allowed to practice and compete • 24 – The number of credit hours you must pass each school year that meet PTD requirements in order to be eligible to compete the next school year; at least 18 of those credit hours must come during the fall and spring semesters combined

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance PTD Notes • In your first two years of college, virtually any “new” coursework meets PTD • Beginning in your third year of college, you must have at least one major officially declared • At that point, only coursework that meets General Education Blocks 1-4, your major requirements, and/or coursework in a minor that you are required to take as a condition of your major can meet PTD requirements

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Actual vs. Averaging PTD Method • Actual – passing 24 PTD credit hours in previous two regular school year semesters (with a maximum of six in the summer) basically gets you eligible for the next year • Averaging – passing an average of at least 12 PTD credit hours per each full-time semester of enrollment here at WSC (with a maximum of 25% of those credit hours coming in the summer) basically gets you eligible for the next year.

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance PTD Example #1 • Is Ron eligible to compete in the fall? • Does he meet the Actual Method of PTD (i.e., did he pass at least 24 credit hours during the last school year)? • NO  He only passed 22 PTD credit hours • Does he meet the Averaging Method of PTD (i.e., has he passed at least 12 credit hours per each semester of enrollment here at WSC)? • YES  He passed 54 total credit hours in his first four semesters, which is 13.5 credits per semester. • What about his GPA? • He is okay for now – but barely with his 2.01 GPA

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance PTD Example #2 • Is Brian eligible to compete in the fall? • Does he meet the Actual Method of PTD (i.e., did he pass at least 24 credit hours during the last school year)? • NO  He only passed 18 PTD credit hours • Does he meet the Averaging Method of PTD (i.e., has he passed at least 12 credit hours per each semester of enrollment here at WSC)? • YES  He passed 73 total credit hours in his first four semesters, which is 12.17 credits per semester, with only 8.2% in summer • What about Six-Credit Rule? • NO  He only passed three credit hours in last spring semester; cannot use summer school to meet six-credit rule

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance WSC Academic Probation • If you end up on WSC Academic Probation, in your next regular academic term you need to get your cumulative GPA back above 2.00 to get off this list and remain in school • If you do not get your cumulative GPA above 2.00, you will likely be academically suspended from WSC, although it may depend upon your semester GPA • If you are academically suspended from WSC, the suspension lasts for one semester, and you will not be eligible at another four-year school in that time.

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Transfer Notes • If you decide you want to transfer, you need to talk to me and/or your head coach first as you need to get permission to speak to any other four-year school first; if you don’t get permission first, you are putting your eligibility at the new school at risk • You need to be academically eligible here in order to be able to compete at your next school • Let me know if you have questions!!!

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance NCAA Drug Testing Program • As of now, conducts annual, random, on-campus drug testing for WSC sports: • All other sports may be tested at NCAA post-season competition (i.e., regionals/nationals), but not conference playoffs (NSIC) • Discussion about expanding scope of program to include all sports and year-round testing

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance NCAA Drug Testing Program • How to test positive • Not showing up for the test • Having substances from the NCAA Banned Drug List in your system • Illegal Drugs (marijuana for example) • Prescribed Medication that our Athletic Training Room has no record that you need (ADHD medication, etc.) • Unapproved supplement (GNC products, etc.) • Too much caffeine (stimulant) • Performance Enhancing Drugs (steroids, etc.)

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance NCAA Drug Testing Penalties • First positive test • Lose a year of competition (instead of four years, you only get three), and have to sit out of competition for 365 days • Need to apply for reinstatement from the NCAA, including taking and passing a new drug test • Automatically selected for all future NCAA on-campus/post-season drug tests • Second positive test • Basically, your collegiate athletic career is over

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Texas A&M football student-athlete Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy as a redshirt freshman • Since then, he has been involved in a slew of publicity involving a wide-variety of issues that hit on nearly everything discussed thus far • Only exception  As of now, I’m unaware of any Drug Testing issues with Johnny

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Ethical Conduct • He is currently being investigated by Texas A&M and the NCAA for potential violations; if he or even his family members are discovered to have lied to investigators, he would likely be deemed permanently ineligible (Dez Bryant at Oklahoma State) • Photos on Twitter of him gambling at a casino are okay as long as he was of age

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Amateurism • This is the heart of Johnny’s problem’s right now • He is being accused by memorabilia dealers of being paid thousands of dollars for his autograph; if true, then he effectively has become a professional and might lose at least some of his eligibility (similar: Ohio State football) • Even if he didn’t get paid for his autographs at the time, if there was a promise of future payment after he went pro, or even if he had any knowledge that the dealer planned on selling the autograph, Johnny had an obligation to try to prevent the event from occuring

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Amateurism • Texas A&M sent dozens of cease & desist orders last fall to various businesses selling “Johnny Football” merchandise; if they knew of these products and didn’t try to stop them, Johnny might have been deemed ineligible • A friend named “Uncle Nate” might have served as a conduit with dealers in potential signings; if true, then Nate would also technically be considered an agent, and NCAA student-athletes are not permitted to have agents/anyone representing their financial interests (changes since Cam Newton)

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Amateurism • Jay Bilas pointed out earlier this month that at the time, anyone could log onto the ShopNCAASports.com website, type in “Johnny Manziel” and have his jersey number come up. • Technically, nobody is supposed to be permitted to sell merchandise that directly singles out a specific student-athlete, so essentially the NCAA committed a violation on itself (O’Bannon lawsuit)

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Financial Aid • Earlier in the off-season, Johnny made news by sitting courtside at an NBA game • Turns out that Johnny’s family is very rich, and this is actually permissible assuming that he received the money to pay for the tickets from his parents, and he did not receive any special favors to receive courtside seating

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Progress-Towards-Degree • This past spring, Johnny was enrolled as a full-time student at Texas A&M, but entirely with on-line classes • Technically, this is permissible as long as all of the classes are typically offered by the institution to all students and run the course of the semester like any other course • NOTE: These typically cost more if you do decide to take online classes!!!

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Compliance In The News • Social Media • While we haven’t discussed this yet, Johnny certainly has certainly utilized Twitter quite a bit over the past several months • Tips for Social Media: • Never post anything you wouldn’t want your parents/ grandparents/future employer to see • You may face consequences for inappropriate posts • Generally speaking, avoid inflammatory subjects and bad language • After contests/events, maybe wait a while before posting anything • You are building your brand right now for the rest of your life • It’s amazing how fast something can get spread around now

Wayne State College Athletic Compliance Bringing It Back Home • But Johnny Manziel, Ohio State football, Jadeveon Clowney’s lunch with Jay Z, Cam Newton, the O’Bannon case…do they really have any impact on you here at Wayne State? • Absolutely! A violation is a violation wherever it occurs, and the NCAA does not care where it occurs. • Most extreme example: Lynn University had its 2005 NCAA National Title taken away due to major violations
