Who, What, Why, and How • Laboratory Technologist working in the field of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation • To provide a system to allow technologists to become specialist within the processing laboratories. • The complexity and uniqueness of services, the high level of responsibility , the ability for critical decision making and the lack of specific training. • Develop set standards with examinations both locally and nationally
Manitoba’s Experience • HPSC Lab –dedicated lab provides service for adult, pediatric, autologous and allogenic transplants for MBMTP • Identified the need for reclassification for laboratory technologists in the HPSC Lab to Human Progenitor Cell (HPC) Technologists • Approved by the Lab Directors and Acting Director of MBMTP • Prepared Reclassification Proposal outlining the criteria and needs assessment which was reviewed and accepted by the union (MAHCP) and with CCMB Human Resources
ASHI/ABHI Classification -HLA • CHS- Certified Histocompatibilty Specialist • CHT -Certified Histocompatibilty Technologist • CHA - Certified Histocompatibilty Associate
Documentation Revised job descriptions –(ISCT has developed job descriptions) Developed an extensive training program with examinations (45 HPSC Lab SOPS and 17 QA SOPS) Internal and external proficiency testing for all technologists Continuing Education hours may include teleconferences (AABB,ISCT), local seminars on relevant topics, scientific meetings which may include poster or oral presentations Developed competency based objectives for HPSC processing
MANITOBA BMT PROGRAMHPSC LABORATORYCOMPETENCY ASSESSMENT –Volume Reduction of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells-Apheresis (HPC-A) • The HPSC Technologist shall reduce the volume of HPC-A products to 45-70 mL within 45 minutes with 90%nucleated cell recovery, 90% of the time .

Eligibility Requirements Human Progenitor Cell Technologists –Charge • Med Lab Degree, B.SC with Med lab diploma, or ART in Immunology, or in Hematology, SBB ( Blood Bank), with at least two one-semester courses in a biological science.(ie Immunology) • At least five years experience in a HPSC Laboratory at a senior or charge level • Demonstrates a high level of competency in all relevant techniques • Undergo proficiency testing and meet all internal and external standards • Must have a minimum of 15 hours of relevant continuing educational activities per annum • *Must obtain a 85% pass mark in set examination (* in progress, developing a Syllabus of Studies) • Equivalent to the ASHI standards (CHS) or AABB (SBB)
Eligibility Requirements Human Progenitor Cell Technologists –Senior • Med Lab Degree or diploma,with at least one-semester courses in a biological science • At least three years experience in a HPSC Laboratory at a senior level • Demonstrates a high level of competency in all relevant techniques • Undergo proficiency testing and meet all internal and external standards • Must have a minimum of 12 hours of relevant continuing educational activities per annum • *Must obtain a 85% pass mark in set examination (* in progress, developing a Syllabus of Studies) • Equivalent to ASHI (CHT), AABB -BB

Demonstrates a high level of competency in all relevant techniques Undergo proficiency testing and meet all internal and external standards Must have a minimum of 12 hours of relevant continuing educational activities per annum *Must obtain a 80% pass mark in set examination (* in progress, developing a Syllabus of Studies) Equivalent to ASHI (CHA)
