  3. Through the centuries the apostles have been turned into unapproachable supermen … yet … they were very ordinary

  4. They weren’t old men, but youths, probably in their 20’s, perhaps John in his late teens, and Peter near 30.

  5. We know Peter was married …Matthew 8:14

  6. …And suggests the other apostles had wives…I Cor. 9:5

  7. They all came from lower or middle classes, earning their livelihood by ordinary occupations.

  8. I. These were imperfect men

  9. 1. They were afraid in a violent storm.

  10. 2. They fell asleep in Gethsemane

  11. 3. Angry when Mary emptied alabaster boxMatthew 26:8

  12. 4. Lapses in memoryMatthew 16:5

  13. 5. Two wanted to incinerate a townLuke 9:54

  14. 6. Slow to grasp the teaching of JesusMark 8:16-18

  15. 7. Boasted they would not deny JesusLuke 22:61

  16. Yet … these are the men whose weaknesses and failures were transformed by the Master into strengths that made them the foundation of the ChurchEph. 2:20
