Sweet hour of prayer!That calls me from a world of care,And bids me at my Father’s throneMake all my wants and wishes known.In seasons of distress and grief;My soul has often found relief,And oft escaped the tempter’s snareBy thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

  3. What is prayer ? • Communication with God • Could include request for ourselves, for others, confession of sin and thanksgiving

  4. Why should we pray ? • Prayer is not for God to find out what we need, he already knows (Mat 6:8) • God wants us to pray because it expresses our trust him • Quality of our personal relationship with God related to prayer • Jesus compares prayer and asking to that of a child asking a parent (Luke 11: 11-13) • We need to ask with an intent to receive.

Why is prayer effective ? • Prayer changes the way God acts • Paul and Silas in prison • Prayer of Jehoshaphat king of Judah 2 Chronicles 20 vs 1 to 19 • Fasting • Gathering together • Praise God for who he is and his almighty power • Remind God of his Promise • Describe the situation and the potential consequences • Acknowledge cannot overcome the situation by force • Relies on God for his will – our eyes are upon you • Waits for God to act – all of Judah, wives, children and infants stood

  6. Matthew 6:9-13 New King James Version (NKJV) • 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. • 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. • 11 Give us this day our daily bread. • 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. • 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. • [a]For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Matthew 6: 9 (NKJV) • 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. • Father defines our relationship to our God • At salvation we are adopted into God’s family • As his children we have: • Father love – John 17 vs 23 (father loves us as he loved Christ) • Father care – 1 Peter 5 vs 7 (cast all your cares on him for he cares) • Fathers comfort – II Cor 1 vs 3-4 (comforts us in our tribulation) • Fatherly chastisement – Heb 12 vs 6 (who he loves he chastens) • Fatherly inheritance – 1 Peter 1 vs 3&4 (to an inheritance incorruptible)

Matthew 6: 9 (NKJV) • 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. • Jesus prays to the Father • Teaches his disciple's to pray to the Father • Does not pray to himself • We have no references in the bible of praying directly to the Holy Sprit • The Holy Sprit is our comforter and counselor, He enables us to pray • Jesus teaches his disciples to pray to the Father in his name • We should address our prayers to God the Father or the Lord Jesus

Matthew 6: 9 (NKJV) • 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowedbe Your name. • Hallowed means to reverence or worship • Names for our God • Righteous – He makes us clean • Sanctifier – He has called me and set me apart • Healer – He heals our sin and my diseases • Victory – He has given me victory over our enemy Satan • Peace – He is has given us peace • Provider – He will provide for our needs

  10. Matthew 6: 10 (NKJV) • 10Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. • Pray for His agenda first • Jesus prayed for the Fathers will to be done – Matt 26 vs 39 – Gethsemane • Jehoshaphat prayed for God’s will - 2 Chronicles 20 vs 12 • Our will vs God’s will – John 15:7 abide in me, and my words abide in you

Matthew 6:11 New King James Version (NKJV) • 11 Give us this day our daily bread. • Depend on Him for all our needs • Matt 6 vs 25, 32 - Heavenly father knows what we need and will provide it just when we need it as he does for his creation in nature • Dependence shows faith • Without faith it is impossible to please God

Matthew 6:12 New King James Version (NKJV) • 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. • Get our heart right with God and people • Psalm 66:18 – God does not listen to prayers of those who have unconfessed sin • Mark 11 vs 25 – And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses

Matthew 6:13 New King James Version (NKJV) • 13And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. • Prevention and Protection • Do not allow us to take the candy aisle walk • Overcoming sin - John 17-15 – deliver them from the evil one • Jesus himself was tempted – Luke 4 vs 1&2 • Jesus did not fall for Satan’s temptation, Satan departed – Luke 4 vs 13

What did Jesus teach about praying in his name ? • John 14 vs 13 and 14, John 15 vs 16, John 16 vs 23 & 24 • prayer made in his authorization • not necessary for a prayer to be heard by God • not a guarantee that it will be heard • become customary for us • prayers n the bible do not all have it – Lords prayer, Stephens pray

What did Jesus teach about… • Praying in faith - Matt 21 vs 22 – believe you will receive • Praying in humility – Luke 18 vs 11 to 14 – self righteous vs humble • Praying in private – Matt 6 vs 6 – seen vs unseen during prayer • Praying with others – Matt 18 vs 19– where 2 or 3 are gathered • Fasting and praying – Matt 6 vs 16 - and when you fast – • Abstinence from food, drink • Could also be other things that are distracting us from focusing on God • In OT it was a way of expressing grief or humbling oneself before God

Why do we have unanswered prayer ? • Jesus himself had a prayer wish that was not answered - Luke 22:42 • Paul had a “thorn” on his side, grace is sufficient for you - 2 Cor 12 vs 7 to 9 • Unconfessed Sin – Psalm 66:18 – If I have cherished iniquity in my heart • Not forgiving others – Mark 11 vs 25 – when you pray, first forgive others • God’s providence – Isaiah 55 vs 8&9 – my ways are not your ways • Test our faith – Job, James states testing of our faith produces patience
