WHAT IS PALM OS? • It is a mobile operating system. • Its been used in smart phones, wrist watches, handheld game consoles, GPS devices etc. • Provides a software platform for any handheld PDAs made by Palm Inc. • Designed to fit palm size device of specific size and specific display size. • It uses TCP/IP network access.
Back to the 90’s • Developed by Jeff Hawkins at Palm Computing Inc. • Designed in 1996 • Six versions were designed: • Palm OS 1.0(1996) • Palm OS 2.0(March 10 1997) • Palm OS 3.0(March 9 1998) • Palm OS 4.0(March 19 2001) • Palm OS 5(June 2002) • Palm OS Cobalt (Feb 10 2004)

Palm OS 5 • Supports ARM(32 bit Advanced RISC Machine) devices • Supports high density 320 x 320 screens with full sound playback and record API • Released 4 versions: • 5.2 - supports 480x320 resolutions and introduces a new handwriting input system called Graffiti 2. • Palm OS 5.3 Simplified Chinese Edition - supports Simplified Chinese, adds support for QVGA resolutions, and API for virtual Graffiti • Palm OS Garnet (5.4) - provides support for multiple screen resolutions, ranging from 160x160 to 480x320, updated Bluetooth libraries. • Garnet OS 5.5 – designed mostly for Garnet VM virtual machine.
