Traditions and customs in Moldavia • In the traditional popular culture , the customs represent an important chapter, because man’s entire life, the work during the year and his different occupations, the relationships with his peers and the mythological embodiments were inserted with the customs. In our folklore, some customs have kept the ample forms of development , in which the old rites are combined with the ceremonial acts, with spectacular manifestations.The traditions and customs in the North- Eastern Romania( Moldavia) are some of the most beautiful and emotional customs which our country boasts of. It is one of the very few areas in our country which have kept the traditional values.
The “Martisor” Traditions and Customs : • The “Martisor” is a celebration which has the Romanian mark.The 1st March , “Martisor’s day” announces the beginning of the spring.
Easter Traditions and Customs : • One of the very important aspects about the Easter traditions in Moldavia is the “ pasca” ( this is the Romanian word)-it is a traditional type of cake. It is sacredly made by the housewives which are previously preparing by a prayer rite. It is made only with special and “clean” ingredients .”Pasca” is sanctified at the Church , in the resurrection night- which all the citizens take part to- and it is the first thing to eat at the awakening.Unlike other regions where in the midnight it is sang just the traditional „ Christ is risen”, which marks the resurrection of the Savior, in Moldavia, the moment is indicated by shootings or cracklings. They are meant to ward off the bad spirits.The unmarried women go to the Church in the resurrection night and they wash the bell tower with clean water, and in the Easter morning they are washing their faces with it for being the unmarried guys’ liking. According to the tradition , the boys who have feelings for these women have to go to their houses and give them a red egg.The painting of the eggs are other habitual rites in Moldavian regions ; the red eggs, the traditional food made of lamb, or the plum cake got out of the skilled housewives’ hands are completly filling evey citizen’s table.
Wedding Traditions and Customs : • One of the ancient wedding customs, which is practiced nowadays in many areas of Moldavia is “the calling to the wedding”. The tradition says that on the wedding day , the newlyweds’ families- which they lead- are going from door to door , with brandy or wine , to call the citizens to the feast.Another custom specific to this region is about choosing the godparents. In the Moldavian tradition, the bride and the groom have more pairs of godparents. Depending on their social position they can choose up to 15- 20 pairs to marry them.Among other authentic traditions there are the chicken’s act , decorating the tree or the bride’s going to the water.
New Year’s Eve Traditions • The main tradition at the years’ change is attributed to the children and the youth. They are responsible for the announcement of the New Year by a lot of games and carols specific to the area: the goat’s or bear’s act.
