  2. Earliest Religions • Animism would be the oldest known type of religion. This is a primitive religion, which sprang up independently in many areas of the world, but in most countries has mainly been replaced by more formal religion.

  3. Animism • In animism, spirits are considered to inhabit familiar objects in the landscape. This can still be found in many primitive aboriginal cultures. • Examples: • Australian Aborigines • Native Americans • Celtic Pagans

  4. Formal Religions • Countries first to develop more formal religions with rituals, etc. • India • Sumer (Middle East/Iraq) • Egypt
