Ratifying the Constitution • Anti – Federalists • Did not want the Constitution to be ratified • Believed a strong central govt would endanger people’s liberties • A govt that met in a far away place couldn’t represent true interests of the people • Disagreed with the “Necessary & Proper” clause in the Constitution • Wanted a Bill of Rights added to protect citzen’s rights against a strong central govt

The Federalist Papers • The Federalist Papers • Essays written by leading Federalists that supported ratification of the Constitution • Included Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, & John Jay • Were published in newspapers across the U.S. • Is credited with helping raise enough support to ratify the Constitution
