The Famous Five Book Review
The Plot • Five on a Treasure Island is the first book in the series of The Famous Five. Written by Enid Blyton, this book tells the story of three brothers and sisters, Anne (10), Dick (11), and Julian (12) and their tomboy cousin Georgina (11), or as she likes to be called, George. George’s loyal dog Timmy, who she hides from her parents, makes up the last member of the Famous Five. This book takes place when Anne, Dick and Julian go on a holiday to George’s parents house in Kirrin Bay. At first George is a girl who likes to be alone, so she is angry when the others come for a holiday. But soon they all become the best of friends when George takes them over to Kirrin island (which was originally owned by her mother, but was hers to own when she was older). They then travel to an under water shipwreck on the other side of the island. George explains that it was once filled with gold before it sunk, but no one could ever find it. When the ship is blown onto land from a violent storm, the children explore the wreck and find a map, showing that the gold is in the dungeons of a castle on Kirrin Island. Uncle Quentin, George’s father who tries to earn money for the family, takes the map from the children and sells it to two strangers. The strangers work out that the map shows the place of the gold, so they try to buy the island. The children haven’t told Uncle Quentin about the gold, so he sells the island to the people. Now the famous five have to find the gold before the strangers. But can they?
Favourite Part and Least Favourite part • Favourite Part- • Five on a Treasure Island at times was hilarious, at other times exciting, and at other times had me biting my nails. It was hard to pick a favourite part, but I really enjoyed when they were trapped on the island with the strangers, and had to use their few resources to find a way to escape. From the first few chapters of the book, Enid Blyton had been setting up the exciting finish with lots of little ideas here and there, that could later be used. I thought this was very clever. • Least Favourite Part- • During all the thrilling moments, there were parts that were boring, and seemed to drag on, and on, and on. I really disliked the opening of the book, because it took quite a while to get to all the adventure and action.
Favourite Character • Every single character had something unique and interesting about them, so I had trouble deciding my favourite character out of them all. I decided Julian was my favourite character, because I could relate to him. He was relatively my age, and he was the oldest of the five, like I am the oldest child in my family. He took the role of the leader during the book, and once again, that is like me, out my brother, sister, and I.
Recommendations • I really enjoyed Five on a treasure Island and sometimes I found I couldn’t put the book down. I’m sure children aged from 7-14 would love this book because it suits a lot of people with different opinions of what makes a good book. It is a funny, adventurous, clever and thrilling classic. I’m sure most children over the world would love to read Five on a Treasure Island and the other books in the series of Famous Five.
What Makes This Book a Classic? • I think the reason Five on a Treasure Island (and the other books in the series) is a classic is because it relates to what children love doing. This book was first published back in 1942, and back then there were no I-pods or Playstations. Back then children used to have fun by playing with their friends and by going on adventures like the Famous Five do. Even these days I’m sure there are children who play on computers and watch TV who wish they could do what the Famous Five do. I think the story is a classic because it talks about what children love doing.
