4. Requirements to Recertify • NSP instructor certification is valid for a period of three years, at which time it expires. Like initial instructor certification, recertification is based on evidence of observed competence = level of teaching activity, formal evaluation, and participation at instructor CE • There are 4 elements to ReCertify for OEC 1. Teaching • have taught at least twice during each of the three years • Teaching events can be session of OEC Class (preferred), or part of registered continuing OEC Ed class, or registered Senior OEC training, or station at OEC Refresher (least preferred) • Class must have a registration number (registered class) and should be referenced in instructor log.
4. Requirements to Recertify (cont’d) • There are 4 elements 2. Instructor ReCert ID clinic • Attend once during 3 year period • Must be a registered course 3. Observation • An Instructor Trainer (IT) must observe (and report on) instructor giving a “6 pack” oriented class at least once in the 3 year period • Can be session of OEC Class (preferred), or part of registered continuing OEC Ed class, or registered Senior OEC training, or station at OEC Refresher (least preferred)
4. Requirements to Recertify (cont’d) • There are 4 elements 4. OEC Refreshers • Gone through all 3 Refresher cycles • Participate in all stations of each refresher
5. Rules on ITs • Every registered class must have an identified IT • OEC Refreshers, and OEC and Sr OEC practical exams must have ITs from a patrol different from the IOR
6. Rules about OEC Challenges 1. Challenge criteria = must meet one or more of • Emergency trained and currently certified as: EMT, MD/DO, PA/NP, RN, or LPN. • A previous OEC certification that has not been expired for more than one year. • Wilderness First Responders (WMI, WMA, and SOLO) whose courses have a minimum of 72 hours of course work 2. Challenges must be registered separately from courses. 3. Challenge applicants must practice skills with an OEC instructor prior to the challenge testing. 4. May fail a maximum of 1 practical or 1 skill station and be allowed to retest on the same day. Success Rate is low unless “3” is thoroughly done
7. Role of the IT • Responsible for completing evaluations & program oversight • When credentialing (eg OEC) is involved, must attend enough classes and the final evaluation to ascertain that the national standard has been consistently met • Evaluate the instructional performance of each instructor participating in the course, such evaluations being required for instructor certification and recertification • Meet with the IOR and any helping instructors, following the evaluation, to review the completed QA form and, if needed, provide any suggestions for improvement
7. Role of the IT (cont’d) • Selection An Instructor Trainer appointment is a job, not an award. The recommended minimum ratio is one Instructor Trainer to ten Instructors • 1. Is appointed annually on an as-needed basis by the Division Program Supervisor with input from the Region Administrator. • 2. Reports to the Region Administrator or directly to the Division Supervisor if the Division does not use Region Administrators.
