Hard Times • Most settlers in the first 2 waves died • Leadership uses harsh control to save colony • Relations with Indians alternate between shaky peace and violence
Brown Gold • Tobacco trade saves American colonies • John Rolfe • Indentured servants – contracted worker for a limited time in return for food, shelter and travel expenses • Headright System – 50 acres if you come to Virginia!
House of Burgesses • Jamestown Government • 1st popularly elected legislature in New World • White male landowners could vote for House members • Governor could veto House legislation
