  2. Mixed numbers contain a whole number and a fraction • 2 6/8 is a mixed number • So is 8 3/4 Mixed Numbers

  3. Subtracting Mixed Numbers (Step 1) First, check if the denominators of the fractions are the same. If so, go to step three. If not, go to step two.

  4. Adding Mixed Numbers (Step 2) Make the denominators the same. Find the LCD (least common denominator) of the denominators, and make an equivalent fraction.

  5. Finding the LCD • The LCD of a number is the smallest whole number that can divide into both denominators. For example…………… 4/5 + 4/6. List the factors of each denominator. 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48 30 is the smallest number that is a factor of both denominators

  6. Getting An Equivalent Fraction • An equivalent fraction is a fraction that is equal to another. For example, 2/4 is equal to ½. Here is how you find an equivalent fraction. It is very simple. All you have to do is multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Another way to do it is to divide the numerator and denominator at the same number. Here is an example. Take 4/5. 4x2 is 8 and 5x2 is 10 so 8/10 is equivalent to 4/5.

  7. Subtracting Mixed Numbers (Step 3) First, subtract the whole numbers, and then the fractions. Here is an example. 4 4/5 – 2 2/5 = 4-2=2 4/5 - 2/5= 2/5 ANSWER-----2 2/5

  8. Example 7 5/6 – 6 7/8 Step 1: Find the LCD 6,12, 18, 24, 30 8,16, 24, 32, 40 The LCD is 24. Step 2: Make an equivalent fraction 6x4=24 5x4=20 8x3=24 7x3=21 5/6=20/24 7/8=21/24
