  1. Revised Surface Water Supply Index (SWSI) for Colorado NIDIS Upper Colorado River Basin Meeting Feb. 24, 2011 Mike Gillespie, NRCS

  2. Original Colorado SWSI: 1982 – present • Dec – May: Snowpack, Reservoir Storage & Total WY Precipitation • June – November: Monthly Streamflow, Reservoir Storage, Monthly Precipitation • Weighted sum of nonexeedance probabilities - does not statistically behave like a nonexeedance probability itself, nor does it allow for comparison of basins on an equal probability basis.

  3. Revised SWSI: Developed by David Garen 1993 • Definition: Surface-water supply – The quantity the SWSI is intended to index, is to be the reservoir storage at the beginning of, plus the natural streamflow during, the primary snowmelt and growing season relevant to the region of interest. • Transition from 4 digit to 8 digit HUCs • An increase from 7 SWSI values to ~42 SWSI values per month • Methodology: • For Jan-Jun: SWSI = Streamflow Forecast + Reservoir Storage • For Jul-Sept: SWSI = Reservoir Storage + Obs. Streamflow • For Oct-Dec: SWSI = Reservoir Storage

  4. Schedule: • Colorado Basin (west of Cont. Divide) complete April 15, 2010. • Rio Grande, Arkansas and South Platte completed by April 15, 2011 • Reconstructed historical time series (1982 – Present) and comparison to observed annual water supplies and traditional SWSI values. Provided by Doesken and Wolter, summer 2011.
