More Start-Up reviews Status of AD after start-up, Tommy Eriksson Linac3 Start-up 2012, DetlefKuchler LEIR Start-up 2012, Sergio Pasinelli • AD start up «busy», usual list of problems, but no special complaints. • AD ejection septum leak: left as it was with water circuit closed and pumped • New GEM’s and cameras very useful for matching (Improve RFQ efficiency.) • LINAC3 : Controls upgrades not transparent • Beam energy measurement in the LBS line very difficult (timings of Linac3 and PSB decoupled, no official ion cycle in the PSB). Linac3 would need a dedicated line to measure the beam energy (especially in the future when we will work with different ion types) • LEIR : A long list of controls problems ranking from DB configuration problems, wrong GFA connections,…, to a 100msec delay with respect to LINAC • Recommendations and actions : Controls and software test period needed IEFC 19/10/2012
Scrubbing and e-cloud Results from carbon coatings in 2012 MDs of SPS, Mauro Taborelli Recent electron cloud studies on SPS, Giovanni Iadarola • Tests with carbon coated vacuum chambers equipped with solenoids showed the suppression of e-cloud. E-cloud only visible at St-St edges. • SPS is very well scrubbed for operational beams (50nsec), but e-cloud can still be provoked with 25nsec beam and high intensity. • An interesting beam : 1.8e11 p/bunch 25 nsec was delivered by the PS. This could be very useful for scrubbing after LS1. • Recommendation : check the conditioning of the St-St edges of the coated pipes towards the end of the run. IEFC 19/10/2012
LHC beam quality SPS: Beam stability and tail population at scrapers , Lene Drosdal Injector beam quality, Rende Steerenberg SPS emittance measurements, Hannes Bartosik • Periods with degraded performance in the LHC (transfer line and injection losses, losses during squeeze and collision preparation) lead to an intensive campaign of measurements in the injectors. • An ad hoc working group (Bettina, Rende and Verena) was created to coordinate the quality measurements, the calibration and logging in the injectors. • Since most of the LHC troubles pointed to beam tails, a lot of studies on non Gaussian tails were performed in the SPS, first with scrapers, later with multiple wire scans. BUT heavy use of wire scanners BI should study impact of LHC beams, and frequent measurements, on the sublimation of the wires of the WS. This is how it looks like when all is good.After an optics tweak in the PSB injection line and tune and chromaticity optimization in the PS. PS: references taken with this techniques were very useful to validate the Q20 performances IEFC 19/10/2012
Emittance measurements WS development, Bernd Dehning BGI status, MariuszSapinski • Presentation of a new wire scanner design, more mechanical robustness, all moveable parts in the vacuum and more precision and better dynamic range for particle detection. • The BGI monitor in the SPS will be repaired and can be tested again after the TS3. • For the moment the magnets of the BGI cannot be used in daily operation, (no interlocks) • Actions and recommendations : • Impedance calculations for new WS chamber • Material study for WS in view of sublimation • A simple 2-magnet system with one power convertor is needed for operation. • IN VIEW OF RECENT EVENTS (4 wire scanners broken in SPS during last 2 months) WE FEAR FOR THE SYSTEMATIC USE OF WS WITH HIGH INTENSITIES. WE RECOMMEND STRONGLY THE USE OF SYNCHROTRON LIGHT MONITOR IN THE SPS: IEFC 19/10/2012
New Developments PSB Finemet® cavitystatus, Mauro Paoluzzi The Finemet system was successfully tested at h=1 up to 4.6e12 protons. Voltage distortion from beam does not affect performance. Some hardware limitations were identified (amplifier topology, loop gain, soldering) an will be removed. 50% more intensity can be expected in next MD’s PS transverse damper, Alfred Blas • Effectiveness of the horizontal damper could be demonstrated on the TOF beam and a 25nsec beam of 72 bunches. • Actions and recommendations : • Vertical damper needed to damp injection oscillations from different booster rings. • Studies showed an instability at injection which is probably already present in booster. New Developments Q20 status, YannisPapaphilippou After a year’s effort, the Q20 is now used operational for LHC filling. Performance is at least as good, if not better than Q26. Especially longitudinal stability better under control. Action : try to make it work on Pb cycle to avoid optics changes in transfer lines. IEFC 19/10/2012
More Studies PS working point control with PFW, Alexander Huschauer Controlling Q, Q’, Q’’ with the PFW seems very difficult using a linear matrix. Non linear knobs might be more suitable. ELENA status and AD beam studies, Tommy Eriksson Many studies going on such as : studies of p.u’s, bunched beam cooling, use of electrostatic triplets etc. Could we use AD to bench mark IBS and space charge? Stacking, and hence synchronisation to the PS might be needed. SPS LSS2 fast extraction for neutrino beams, Wolfgang Barman Extraction of 100GeV bunch in LSS2 using the proton inflector could be accomplished. Kick strength, aperture and clearing seem to be sufficient. AWAKE - requirements on proton beam and facilities, EddaGschwendtner Need for very short bunches. MD’s on bunch rotation ongoing. For the moment NOT possible in parallel MD. IEFC 19/10/2012
