3. Chapter 1 What is a… “Monitor?” “Third?” “Desk?” What is Ender’s real name? What do you learn about Ender’s siblings? (their names, their personalities, etc.)

4. Chapter 1 “I have to win this now, and for all time, or I’ll fight it every day and it will get worse and worse” (Card, p.7) Why is Ender at school with kids who are older then him?

5. The Conflict… Ender's encounter with Stilson: What are his motives for handling this situation the way he did? What are the unwritten rules of combat that he breaks? Why has he never had to do this before now?

8. Chapter 2 The word “Bugger" might mean a number of things. Are Peter's threats real, a joke, or manipulation? What does Peter think his greatest talent is? In chapter 1 we learned that all of the Wiggins children had monitors at one time. Why were Val's and Peter's removed so long before Ender's?

11. Chapter 3 At this point, why does being a “third” become so important? When Ender starts crying in front of Graff – what does that tell you?

13. Chapter 3 What are Ender’s reasons for going to Battle school? “Conscripts make good cannon fodder, but for officers we need volunteers” (Card, p.20)
