  3. THE RUBAIYAT Definition of “rubai”: Persian word for quatrain or four-line verse; ancient literary form Rubaiyat: plural form of “rubai”

THE RUBAIYAT Poem format: quatrain Rhyme scheme: a-a-b-a Iambic pentameter: each line is 5 clusters of 2 syllables = 10 syllables per line; the stress is on the second syllable Example: Come, fill the Cup, and in the fire of Spring Your Winter-garment of Repentance fling; The Bird of Time has but a little way To flutter -- and the Bird is on the Wing.

  5. THE RUBAIYAT Primary message of a rubai: LIVE FOR THE DAY Translated into English: 1839 Translated by: Edward FitzGerald While not a direct translation, this translation reflects the spirit of the original work.

  6. THE RUBAIYAT What is the Rubaiyat about? According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the poems “reveal a man of deep thought, troubled by the questions of the nature of reality and the eternal, the impermanence and uncertainty of life, and man’s relationship to God.”
