  1. Fungi • Eukaryotic heterotrophs that have cell walls • Cell walls – made of chitin Food Intake • Digest food outside body and absorb it • Feed by absorbing nutrients from decaying matter • Live as parasites absorbing nutrients from bodies of hosts

  2. Structure and Function • Multicellular (besides yeast) • Composed of Hyphae- thin filaments • Lack cross walls- multinucleated • Cross walls- cells contain one or two nuclei

  3. Mycelium- multicellular fungi are composed of many hyphae tangled together in a thick mass • Large surface area- more area to absorb food • Fruiting body- reproductive structure

  4. Hyphae- 3 types • Rhizoids- anchor fungus • Stolons- on surface give rise to mating types (+ -) • Sporangiophores- give rise to tips of sporangia which produce spores

  5. Fairy Ring http://www.dnatube.com/video/1438/Bread-Mold

  6. Reproduction • Asexually- • Hyphae break off and begin to grow on their own • Produce spores- scatter and grow on their own • Sporangia- structures producing spores • Sporangiophores- specialized hyphae containing sporangia

  7. Sexually- two types + and – (no male/female) • Hyphae of opposite types meet, nuclei fuse together • Nuclei form diploid zygote

  8. Spores spread- • Wind • Animals • http://www.dnatube.com/video/1437/Mushroom

  9. Fungus Phylum • Zygomycota- common molds • Ascomycota- sac fungi • Basidiomycota- club fungi • Deuteromycota- imperfect fungi

  10. Fungi= Heterotroph • Saprobes- obtain food from decaying matter • Parasites- obtain food from living directly on organisms • Symbionts- live mutually with other organisms • Carnivorous- Ex: mushroom that traps worms

  11. Fungi= Decomposers • Break down wastes • Promote recycling nutrients in environment

  12. Fungi= Parasite • Cause serious plant and animal disease • Plants • Corn smut • Mildews • Wheat rust • 15% of crops lost to fungus in temperate regions • 50% or up in tropical regions

  13. Human diseases • Athletes foot • Yeast infection

  14. Animal • Cordyceps- infect insects • Chitrid- affects frogs

  15. Fungus=Symbiotic • Lichens- fungus/cyanobacteria or green algae • organism- provides energy • Fungus- provides water and minerals, protection

  16. Mycorrhizae- fungus/plants • Plant roots • 80% of plant species form mycorrhizae • Fungus- absorbs water/nutrients/release enzymes that free nutrients in soil • Plants- provide energy

  17. Slime Mold/Fungus
