29th Operational-MIRS Meeting June 12th 2009 K. Garrett, F. Iturbide-Sanchez, C. Grassotti, and W. Chen
Agenda • Status & Overview of the 6th release of MiRS [Kevin] • MiRS Operational Status [OSDPD] • Review of N19 MiRS performances [Kevin] • Review of F16 MiRS rainfall rate performances [Flavio] • Review of MiRS Package/System/Web-site [Wanchun] • Discussions [All]
MiRS Status (1/3) • Extension of MiRS to ATMS (NDE integration) • Received updated ATMS sample data from IPO, as well as resampling code from MIT Lincoln Lab (Matlab) • Resampled SDRs will be helpful (development, daily processing) • The usual steps for extension of MIRS to a new sensor (bias correction, emissivity covariance matrix)
MiRS Status (2/3) NPP Sample ATMS TDRs (from IPO) Resampled Metop-A AMSU/MHS to ATMS frequency/geometry (code from MIT LL)
MiRS Status (3/3) • In the works (but not for the 6th release) • Improvements to sounding (investigating Sfc P impact both in retrieval and bias correction computation) • Improvements to the rainfall rate. Training on multiple data sources (TRMM, MM5 etc) • Experimental retrieval of wind speed over ocean from emissivity catalogs
Review Aspects • We will review performances of products that are part of this release • Package, New features of Web site
MiRS 6th Release to OSDPD • MiRS DAP package to be delivered to OSDPD on June 15th. • Package tested daily on all sensors on the STAR machines (Linux). • Package tested on OSDPD IBM machines as well (orbital mode). • First official delivery with NOAA-19 processing capability. • F16 SSMI/S hydrometeor profiles/rainfall rate retrieval. • Further validation/assessments of the rainfall rate.
Review of NOAA-19 • NOAA-19 processing capability part of delta-DAP delivered on March 23, 2009. • Same product set as for NOAA-18. • Similar performance relative to NWP, RAOB, TRMM, etc. as NOAA-18 for all products. • No changes to MIRS components specific to NOAA-19 since delta-DAP release.
