  1. 21st Operational-MIRS Meeting October 3rd 2008

  2. Agenda • MiRS General Status [Sid] • MiRS in NDE [All] • MiRS Operational Status [OSDPD] • NOAA-N’ readiness [All] • Core Products / Soundings [Kevin] • Hydrometeors [Flavio] • Emissivity Spectrum Post-processing [Chris] • New Footprint Matching [Steve] • SSMI/S Geolocation Issues [Tom] • MiRS in High resol. Mode / ATMS Simul. [Wanchun] • Convergence MSPPS/MiRS Discussion [All]

  3. Welcome Daisaku Uesawa • Daisaku is a visiting scientist from JMA who will be working on MiRS extension to AMSR-E and if time permit on TRMM/TMI • Daisaku will be with us from until October 31; His work at JMA involves land surface emissivity retrieval for assimilating lower sounding channel data into NWP models • Already interesting results Importance: Shows that MiRS applies to imagers, not just sounders. Potential application: MIS onboard NPOESS Only V channels

  4. Publications • Two papers related to MiRS submitted to peer-review journal, about: • Sea Ice Concentration based on Emissivity • Cross-Track vs Conical geometries. Impact Studies • Two papers in preparation, about: • Overall description of MiRS • Total precpitable Water (TPW) retrieval over land, sea ice and snow using Microwave

  5. MiRS SPSRB briefing • SPSRB review meeting held last month. • Approval granted to go operational with the updates, pending IT resources permit extension to SSMIS • Update will be given by OSDPD later

  6. MiRS in NDE • Recommended (at the project plan review) that OSDPD and NDE examine roles & responsibilities and potentially reduce FY10 funding requirement. • There will be an ICD meeting soon to address these issues, but today it would be nice to get some preliminary items addressed. • Who is in the integration team • Roles of NDE and the PALs in integrating the algorithm, and in monitoring product quality • Who is responsible for writing technical system documents ? • Will we have two versions of MiRS (one running in OSDPD and one in NDE) or better have one single version running for different sensors at OSDPD (N18, 19, etc) and one at NDE (only for ATMS)?

  7. SSMIS Geolocation Issue Before • SSMIS Geolocation issue investigated and a fix implemented (in STAR and OSDPD). UAS channels shifted. • Ninghai Sun confirmed UAS shift (see below). • Tom Kleespies studied the issue as well (see his presentation) After Figure courtesy of Ninghai Sun

  8. Technical/Scientific Updates(Achieved) • Cloud Amount Improvement for SSMIS (part of next release) • First Guess Improvement for Soundings • MiRS Rainfall rate preliminary algorithm (based exclusively on MiRS core products) • Comparison to CLOUDSAT on daily basis • New Footprint Matching implementation • Extension of MiRS to AMSR-E (GUI)

  9. Technical/Scientific Updates(On-Going) • Further Improvement for SSMIS CLW • Improve rainfall rate algorithm with TRMM collocations • Improvement of MiRS AMSR-E (over all surfaces, in all weather conditions) • Extend MiRS to Chinese FY-3 microwave sensors (CRTM files already generated by Mark). • Extension of MiRS to ATMS • Comparison of surface properties to IMS, AMSR-E • Make the surface-emissivity post-processing generic (to apply for ATMS, AMSR-E, etc) • Make MiRS run in a high-resolution mode (experimental)
