18th Operational-MIRS Meeting June 11th 2008
Agenda • MIRS General Status [Sid] • MIRS Operational Status [OSDPD] • SSMIS Geo-location Issues [Tom] • MIRS Science Improvements [Kevin] • MIRS Software Improvements [Wanchun] • MIRS Comparison to CLOUDSAT [Flavio]
New Hires • Two new members will be added to the MiRS project: • Steve Steggall, recent graduate from University of Arizona, will join on July 16th, 2008 • Chris Grassotti, half time, senior scientist with previous experience in data assimilation, algorithm development, will join on July 21st 2008
Hardware • A MIRS-dedicated machine is being ordered. Should be available for daily processing cronjobs and development of MIRS only. It’s a dual quad-core machine (3GHz) with one TB disk space. • This should solve the cluster issues we have been having and ease the usage of the cluster to other users • Expected delivery: August. Expected installation: a couple weeks/months after delivery.
General Status (Work in Progress) • The official version was made on June 15th 2008 • Further improvements were made since, mainly: • Code robustness (using FORCHECK, VALGRIND) • Improvement of the temperature sounding using a better first guess • Comparison between MIRS and CLOUDSAT data (to be daily)
Work in the pipeline • Bottle-neck identification in the MIRS software (to further optimize speed) • Full F95 coding Standards compliance • Code reorganization (follow GOES-R model) • Further improvement to emissivity covariance matrices • CRTM newest version • Development of the Rain rate algorithm based on RWP, T, etc using CLOUDSAT and TRMM • Extend MIRS to ATMS
MIRS / NDE • NDE will (very) soon be available (SADIE machine), so we will: • Login • Implement the ATMS footprint matching code (from UKMO) • Come up with an HDF-5 reader to decode IDPS files • Work on extending MIRS to ATMS (with Simulated Data) • Test MIRS within NDE environment • Hook MIRS to the DHS (Data Handling System) when available
MIRS Licensing Agreements • Six licensing agreements were requested and are in Al’s desk for signature: • 1- Chen Yingying from the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, China • 2- Kozo Okamoto from JMA, Japan, • 3- Peter Wang, from MSC, Taiwan • 4- U. Jaya Prakash Raju, from CNRS, France • 5- Xiaoyang Liu form Peking University, China • 6- Peiming Dong from CMA, China Once signed, passwords will be sent to them to download MIRS (a light version with further improvements if finalized)
MIRS Project Plan/ Funding • Provided no surprises, the MiRS project is in good shape for the next couple years: • The project plan for FY09, FY10, FY11 and FY12 is being finalized • More and more, the focus will shift towards NPP and NPOESS (for ATMS). It’s important we position MIRS for the long term.
