Population by Generation • Birth rates & population rates were lower during WWI, the Depression & WWII • Boomers high birth rates due to postponed births from depression, post WWII & timing – women married & had their babies at a younger age • Baby bust rates fell off with the rise of the Pill & more women entering the workforce • Once the boomers start having children, between 1972 &1992 the echo boom occurs; second largest bump in fertility in Canada; this falls off though as fertility rates decrease & baby bust generation starts having babies –post 1993 • The next (albeit smaller) bump is starting to occur, as the echo boomers procreate Portrait of generations, using the age pyramid, Canada, 2011

Baby Boomers born 1946-65 • The baby boom lasted 20 years; during that time, more than 9.6 million babies were born, an average of close to 412,000 a year- the average # children born per woman was 3.7 • By comparison, the number of births in 2008, when the population was twice as large, was only 377,886.The average number of children per woman is less than 1.7 in recent years. • By 2031 all boomers will be senior citizens - 23%; compared to 15% of population today • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5IJexTaLfg

Tail End of the Boomers – Generation X (1960-66) • Underemployed – University Educated • Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll • “The Pill” • Divorce Laws • Viewed society as meaningless and boring • Refused to conform to society’s norms and values • Distrust in large institutions • More materialistic • Deviated from boomer values - Counterculture

  7. ‘Generation X’ • http://www.cbc.ca/archives/categories/society/youth/generation-x-lives-on-hold/gen-x-vs-the-boomers.html • Novelist Douglas Copeland popularized the term “Generation X” to describe this group of late Baby Boomers who didn’t really feel like Baby Boomers. He argued that they felt no real connection to the Baby Boom culture and at the same time felt overwhelmed by the huge numbers of Boomers. They also lacked many of the opportunities afforded to the earlier Baby Boomers. Jobs weren’t as plentiful and some things really were beyond their reach.

  9. 1) Great Depression: • Births had been postponed during the depression • As economic conditions improved, so did birth rates • Marriage was considered the norm  domestically-oriented generation • Marriage and family resulted in respectability and contentment

  10. 2) World War 2 • 1 in 5 Canadian bachelors serving overseas came home with a war bride (European wives of Canadian husbands) • More adults married and had more kids • Shorter courtships (marriage rates in 1946 remain the highest in Canadian history)Average age of marriage fell between 1941-1956  marry earlier, have more children (age 23 to 21) • Majority of couples had children in the first few years of marriage • Baby Boom increased the birth rate in Canada by 18% • Annual number of births in Canada in 1940 was 253,000 and in 1960 it was 479,000

  11. 3) Immigration • Rising immigration following the war (most from war-torn Europe) • Approx. 2 million people came between 1945-60

Baby Bust Generation born 1966-71 • The baby bust was a smaller period, of only 5 years; during that time, fertility rates were rapidly decreasing, this group accounts for about 2.8 million people. • They were between 40 and 45 in 2011. Some refer to this group as Generation X. • This generation, especially men, experienced difficulty entering the labour market in the 1980s and 1990s. This was due to economic recessions and to the fact that they were following and overshadowed by the large baby boom generation.   13. The “Bust Babies” – Gen Y(1967-79) • Period of declining birth rates • Low numbers, overshadowed by boomers • High unemployment, cutbacks in government services for youth • Cynical

Gen “Y” or Echo Boomers born 1972 - 92 • The echo boom also lasted 20 years; during that time, more than 9.1 million babies were born, which was down from the 9.6 million of the baby boom • By comparison, baby boomers had fewer children than their parents, fertility dropped from 3.1 to 1.6 in the mid 1980s. • While growing up, many members of the children of baby boomers generation were influenced by changes that affected their parents. These include increases in separation and divorce rates, increases in female labour force participation, increases in institutional day care, and rapid technological change.

  15. What defines Generation Y? • They are sometimes known as the MTV generation. Personal computers and the Internet became more widespread during their youth. • They’ve witnessed the rise in popularity of video games and MPS, Hip-Hop and Indie bands. • They’ve struggled with childhood obesity and they are the most medicated generation in history.

Echo Boom (1980-1995) • Demographic phase in which a population increase is created as people born during the post-WWII baby boom have their own children • ¼ of Canada’s population • This group has steadily growing power in the Canadian marketplace • Internet age, media smart, technology driven • Contracted out childcare – latchkey kids (returns home from school to an empty house) • Multicultural, anti-racist generation • “Entertain me” generation • Social justice values, suspicious of authority, environmental awareness

Gen “Z” (aka)Millennialsborn 1993 - 2010 • The millennials are people born since 1993, and are sometimes called Generation Z or the internet generation since they are the first generation born after the invention of the internet. • They number about 7.3 million people or 22% of the population and are just starting to enter the labour market. • Millennialsare valued by their parents and country, they are sheltered and protected but at the same time are less innocent & more street smart, they are confident and optimistic, they have been raised to be team players and understand “from me to we”, they are pressured to excel in many different areas, are fairly conventional & are pretty comfortable with their parents’ values.
