  2. Poverty among sole parents mostly refers to poverty amongst sole mothers. • Fathers make up 14% of sole parents with dependents

  3. 6% receive income support • Sole fathers are usually financially better off than sole mothers • This is due to the greater labor market participation of sole fathers • Sole fathers mostly care for older, often adolescent, children.

  4. Shelia Shaver (1998) argues that sole parent poverty becomes an issue caused by their situation as sole carers of dependent children rather than the carer’s gender. • Sole fathers are the most disadvantaged group of all men • The experience of sole parenthood, rather than gender, leads to economic advantages.
