Government in City States • Aristocracies: • City states that were controlled by nobles • Aristocrats (wealthiest land owners) controlled everything • Aristocrats made up laws, acted as judges, controlled religion, and controlled economy • Democracy: • Citizens could vote and take part in government actions • Just like U.S.A
Similarities in City States • Overall small area of land • Population fewer than 10,000 • Majority of population were slaves • Only free adult males had rights • The center of each city state was built on an acropolis or hill. It included a Fort, temple, and other public buildings • Each city state had a market place or meeting place
City State Group Assignment • With your group create a name for your city state • Create/ Choose a government style • Autocracy (emperor/king has all power), Bureaucracy (government organized into different levels), Democracy (citizens run government), Aristocracy (nobles run government) • Write a page explaining the style you chose or created. • Write laws for your state (at least 10) • Create a social class system: • Will there be slaves, are there nobles or rich, how big is your middle class • Write a paragraph for each social class you create explaining their role in society, what laws will each class have or not have, etc. • What role will women, men, and children play in this society
