Brief Overview of HB 5 Career Pathways

SBOE • Approve variety of advanced courses • Comply with foundation program • Prepare students to enter work force • Permit advanced courses to be offered in applied manner • Dual credit can satisfy foundation courses • Create a combined world history and world geography course • Elective credit met by advanced CTE courses: • Certification • Associate degree
Student Earning an Endorsement • Complete 26 credits • 4 math • 4 science • 2 additional electives • SBOE develop curriculum requirements for each endorsement • Participation of educators, business, labor industry • “Opt-in” for arts and humanities • Substitute advanced science with another course related to endorsement • SBOE adopt criteria • “Opt-out” • Student’s parent/guardian permission
District Requirement • Report categories of endorsements offered • District must offer 1 endorsement • Multidisciplinary • Endorsement noted on diploma and transcript
TEA Monitoring • PEIMS Reports • Number of students : • Enrolled in foundation program • Pursuing the distinguished level of achievement • Enrolled in endorsement program • Disaggregated by student groups
CTE • Developed locally • With local partners • Encourage dual credit • SBOE course options • 50% - cost effective courses • At least 6 advanced CTE or tech application to satisfy 4th math • Certification exams – paid by state • Certification not limited to high-demand/ wage/skill occupations • Consortium options
