  1. Understanding Parts of Speech What words DO

  2. Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll • `Twasbrillig, and the slithytoves  Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:All mimsy were the borogoves,  And the momerathsoutgrabe. • "Beware the Jabberwock, my son!  The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun  The frumiousBandersnatch!“ You don’t have to know what the words MEAN, just look at what they’re DOING!

  3. The truth about parts of speech • First of all, part of speechis just the grammatical term for the category that words are assigned to, according to their function. • Categorizing things is a natural human function. We do it to help us understand what is going on. • Understanding the parts of speech can help you break down ANY sentence and construct meaning. • Words are just labels for things and have no meaning outside of how they’re used.

  4. Nouns & Adjectives • Nouns name things. • Abstract • Concrete • Proper • Common • Adjectives describe nouns • Proper Adjectives

  5. Verbs & Adverbs • Verbs show action or state of being • Action verbs • Linking verbs • Adverbs modify (add more detail) to verbs. They show how an action is done.

  6. Identify the parts of speech! • Then there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows and the caught wind died out about the room and the curtains and the rugs and the two young women balloonedslowly to the floor

  7. Exit Ticket – Write the sentence and label every yellow word! • The wind had blown off, leaving a loud bright night with wings beating in the trees and a persistent organ sound as the full bellows of the earth blew the frogs full of life.
