Strategies for Insecticide Treated Net (ITN) Distribution in the DR Congo
Strategies for insecticide treated net distribution in the Democratic Republic of Congo By Dr. Felix Minuku, Dr. John Gikapa Dr. Larry Sthreshley
Background • Malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in DRC with over 2,000,000 cases and 200,000 deaths per year (MOH, 2000) • Malaria is a high socioeconomic burden that causes the loss of 60% harvesting in rural areas (ESP, PNLP)
Distribution Policy • Distribute long lasting insecticide treated nets to pregnant women and children under five for $1.50 during prenatal and growth monitoring visits at health clinics • Sell long lasting nets to the general population at a subsidized price of $4.00

SUMMARY • Malaria is among the major health problems of the DRC • Understanding of how malaria is transmitted is very low • Social marketing of ITNs seems much more effective than just health education • ITN distribution via prenatal services works synergistically for both programs
