14th Amendment (1868): All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privilege or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. [1973: the Court found a “right to abortion” in the yellow-highlighted words, in Roe v. Wade]
First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The First Amendment prohibited establishing a state church. But the court decided government couldn’t support any religious activity at all: Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971): a government action “must not have the primary effect of either advancing or inhibiting religion”
Fifth Amendment: Nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation. 2005: Kelo v. City of New London: The government can take private property for somebody else’s private use. 5-4 decision (Kennedy w/ liberal justices)

Total US debt now: $16 trillion USA = 314 million people X $3 Approx = $1000 million = $1 billion So $1 billion in spending = $3 for you. But only 50% of people pay taxes. So if you pay taxes, $1 billion = $6 for you. $1 billion X 1000 = $1 trillion Spending $1 trillion= $6,000 per taxpayer Adding $5 trillion in debt = $30,000 per taxpayer
