2- MAIN TOPICS IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME DRAFT TIME TABLE Lectures / Working Group /Visits One-week programme / HST 2006
REMARKS AND RECOMMENDATIONS 2- MAIN TOPICS IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME The programme is well balanced Remark: 5-days programme with departure on Friday afternoon not enough time to exchange Suggestions: Departure on Saturday morning with free Friday afternoon to exchange One-week programme / HST 2006
Main Topic 1 - Cosmology 2 hours in the program …. because
Cosmology = Big Questions • What is the universe made of and how does it evolve • How do galaxies, stars and planets form and how do they evolve • The Laws of Physics in extreme conditions • What are the origins and properties of the energetic particles reaching the Earth • Can we learn about the beginning and evolution of the Universe in earthbound laboratories • OR …..
What do you need to UNDERSTAND this picture? What do you need to TEACH this subject ?
Proposal COSMOLOGY (overview) • Basic Astronomical topics • Important General Notions • Big Bang & Proof of Expansion • Cosmic Rays • Cosmic pizza • Proof of existence of Dark Matter • Proof of existence of Dark Energy • Relations with Particle Physics One-week programme / HST 2006
Proposal COSMOLOGY (overview) Make clear distictions: What is scientific proven What is in scientific debate What is a speculation What are the unsolved mysteries in the universe Sources of good information REALLY serious DEFINITELY One-week programme / HST 2006

The different types of interaction • 2.3. The particles’ properties • 3. How to improve their capacities ? • 3.1. What is an ideal detector? One-week programme / HST 2006
Medical Applications of Particle Physics Saverio BRACCINI TERA 3- ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AND LECTURES IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME LECTURE : APPLICATION OF PARTICLE PHYSICS IN DAILY LIFE MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF PARTICLE PHYSICS One-week programme / HST 2006
3- ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AND LECTURES IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME LECTURE : APPLICATION OF PARTICLE PHYSICS IN DAILY LIFE MEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF PARTICLE PHYSICS 1- A short historical review 2- What are the applications of particle physics in medical diagnostics? 3- What are the applications of particle physics in conventional cancer radiation therapy? 4- What is Hadrontherapy? 5- What are the outlooks of the medical applications of particle physics? One-week programme / HST 2006
3- ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AND LECTURES IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME LECTURE : APPLICATION OF PARTICLE PHYSICS IN DAILY LIFE • The GRID • What is the GRID? • Why is the GRID being developed at CERN? • How does the GRID work? • How will the GRID affect us? One-week programme / HST 2006
3- ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AND LECTURES IN THE 1-WEEK PROGRAMME • National Programme • How to include particle physics in the curriculum • The organizations of the country that can help • How to use CERN in site and from distance • The organizations of the country that have collaboration with CERN • Useful bibliography and sites in NET • Researchers of the country that participate or had participated in the research of p.p. One-week programme / HST 2006
4- RECOMMENDATIONS • Use of simulations • Diagrams of apparatus (e.g. cut of detectors) • Combination of diagrams and principles with realistic pictures • Interactive activities during the lectures (e.g. Q & A) • Related hands-on activities One-week programme / HST 2006
CONCLUSION Who should be the target group ? - High School physics Teachers - some training teachers - some people who work in the public understanding of science (journalists, curator of science museum…) - some prospective teachers One-week programme / HST 2006
CONCLUSION • Why is it so important to propose this programme? • Thanks to the use of the mother tongue language, it makes more accessible modern physics to more teachers of the same country. • More teachers of the same country can have access to educational material in their own language. • Among a teacher group of the same country, exchanges are easier not only during the programme but after. • Among a teacher group of the same country, it is easier to apply these new topics to a same curriculum and in the same work conditions.
