Dehulling and groat/hull content measurement at JKI-ZL Groß Lüsewitz M. Herrmann
Equipment: Feed hopper Weighing scales with dehulled sample Compressed air dehuller Air pressure regulator
Influencing factors for groat/hull content: • Environmental effects: • sunny days, latitude • Weather conditions • Fertilizer • Pretreatment of seeds and grain moisture content • Genetical factors: Kernel size and shape; „dehulling ability“ • Dehulling methods (manually 200 kernels; compressed air dehuller, impact dehuller)
Influencing factors for hull content: • Dehulling parameters: • Amount of seeds; • Duration of dehulling • Air pressure • Insufficient air pressure or duration results in ineffective dehulling, but excessive stress (higher air pressure and duration) results in groat breakage.
Quality of dehulling (300g-samples: 5min) Bad dehulled sample
Quality of dehulling Slightly better
Dehulling results are strongly influenced by location and genotype: (results from 2008) % hull content
Replications needed for evaluation of hull content(results 2008 with standards Groß Lüsewitz) % hull content of replicated standards
Summary and conclusions • Capacity: Dehulling with compressed air dehuller in JKI-Groß Lüsewitz: 40 samples daily (300g-samples) • Wild oats need to be pretreated (de-awning) - dehulling leads to blockage of the dehuller • Very strong genotypic and location effects on dehulling • There is a wide range of hull content within the AVEQ-set of entries (10-80%hull) • Hull content from one replication is a very rough estimate (about ±6%) • Many samples need to be cleaned by hand because of remaining hulls or undehulled grains before analysis
