Future for Teen Moms • 1.5% of teen moms get a college degree by age 30 • 80% of unwed teen mothers end up on welfare • Average income without a college degree = $30,000 • $11,600 a year to raise a child • Harder to have a career • Life is no longer “normal”
What happens to the kids? • More likely to be born prematurely • Tend to do poorly in school • More likely to live in poverty • Higher rates of abuse and neglect • More likely to be incarcerated • More likely to become teen parents themselves
