Notable Science and Math Achievements • As a seafaring people, it is only natural that the Greeks would have a keen interest in Astronomy and Mathematics as these would greatly assist them in navigation. • 1. Aristarchus (310 BCE to 230 BCE) • He developed a heliocentric view of the universe. That states that the Sun is at the center of the universe. His ideas were not widely adopted for another millennium.

  3. Notable Science and Math Achievements • 2. Ptolemy (90 CE to 168 CE) • He developed a view of the universe where the Earth was at the center. However, he was also able to calculate celestial motion and worked on geographic calculations to produce accurate maps. They weren’t particularly accurate but they were thorough. • His view of the universe would be accepted until the scientific revolution.

  4. Notable Science and Math Achievements • 3. Pythagoras and his famous theorem. (a²+b²=c²) • 580 BCE – 500 BCE • His followers believed that reality is mathematical and certain symbols have mystical significance. They taught that all brothers of their order should observe secrecy and loyalty. • 4. Euclid: Father of Geometry. (365 BCE – 300 BCE) • Came up with the “Proofs” that we still use to study geometry.

  5. Notable Science and Math Achievements • 5. Archimedes (287 BCE – 212 BCE) • Mathematician. Discovered formulas for areas and volumes of geometric figures like spheres, cylinders and parabolas. • Legend of Archimedes and the bath. • Killed by a Roman soldier during the siege of Syracuse

  6. Notable Science and Math Achievements • 6. Leucippus (5th century BCE) and Democritus (460 BCE – 370 BCE) • Formulated a theory of atomism which stated that everything is composed of atoms that are indivisible and imperishable. • 7. Hippocrates (460 BCE – 377 BCE) • Father of Western medicine • Prolific writer. May not have written the Hippocratic Oath but the Oath speaks to his principles.
