  1. Protesting Industrialization

  2. How did the Luddites react to the increase of mass production? • They destroyed machines and burned factories. • They believed that the machines had put them out of work and made their lives miserable.

  3. What is a trade union? • A trade union is an association of workers who agreed to support and help one another. Since workers outnumbered owners and managers, they knew they would have power if they all protested together. • If union members agreed to strike, production would stop and the owner would lose money.

  4. Robert Owen • Owen was a mill owner who insisted on reasonable living and working conditions for his workers. • He was one of the earliest socialists. He believed that it was government’s responsibility to make sure that all people shared wealth and profits instead of letting a few people control most of the wealth.

  5. Socialism vs. Capitalism • Under capitalism, anyone who has capital is encouraged to use that money to make more money. Capitalists believe that a system where many do this will ultimately benefit everyone. They also believe that government should rarely, if ever, interfere with a free market. • Under socialism, the government will control industrial growth and policies. Socialists want to make sure that everyone has enough to live comfortably; socialists also try to prevent, or at least minimize inequality of wealth.
