Objectives for Today • Discuss changes for the 2013 – 2014 School Year • Learn how to Register for 8th grade CMS Counselors “move up” when you do: Roxanne LeCroy - 8th grade Jolene Johnson - 7th grade
Course Selection for 8th Grade • ALL incoming 8th Graders will register on-line at school with assistance from the Counselors on March 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th .
8th Grade Core Classes * English * Math * US History * Science
G/T HUMANITIES • Students currently enrolled in G/T Humanities will automatically be enrolled for 8th grade. • G/T Humanities classes consist of English and US History • Students enrolled in G/T Humanities and who wish not to be, must apply for a furlough through Learner Services. • Those interested in G/T Humanities program, contact Barbara Myer.
Science, English & U.S. History • Students may choose regular OR Pre-AP/IB classes when selecting Science, English and U.S. History courses for 8th grade. • NO prequalifying for these courses!
On level class vs. Pre AP class Pre –AP teachers said “A Pre-AP student…… • Is willing to study to accomplish his goals. • Is always prepared for class. • Wants to learn. • Attends tutoring. • Goes above and beyond the minimum. • Listens in class. • Turns in work on time. • Is willing to accept challenges. • Is interested in learning. • Never complains about homework.
ALGEBRA 1Pre-AP/IB • Student qualifies based on: * Successful completion of Math 7 Pre-AP/IB * 6th grade Math STAAR * 1st semester grade in Math 7 Pre-AP/IB * Orleans Hanna Algebra Readiness Test • Student will receive 1 high school credit IF all requirements are met (Your grade is not included in high school GPA). • Course content and work load are the equivalent of a high school course. • High school expectations will be adhered to throughout the year. • Any student who did not meet criteria for Algebra 1 Pre-AP/IB will be re-evaluated using final Math 7 Pre-AP/IB grade and 7th Math STAAR score. • There are NO Appeals
MORE Electives in 8th Grade! These 3 additional electives are now available to you as 8th graders. You can also earn High School Credit. • Business Information Technology 1 (BIM) • Foreign Languages ( Spanish and French) • Principles of Hospitality and Tourism
Business Information Management 1 • Students completing all the requirements of this course will receive 1High School Technology Credit. (grade NOT part of GPA) • Full year elective • It is recommended that students are able to type at least 25 words per minute. • This is a projects based class!
FOREIGN LANGUAGES Spanish 1 Pre-AP/IB & French 1 Pre-AP/IB • Students must have an 85 1st semester average in BOTH English and Math in seventh grade. • Students who do not qualify based upon 1st semester averages may request a re-evaluation to Advanced Academics office with final averages by June 10, 2013. Email advancedacademics@allenisd.org. • Students will earn 1High School Credit if all requirements are met (grade not included in GPA). • Course content and workload are the equivalent of a high school course with extensive outside-of-class preparation. High School expectations will be adhered to throughout the school year.
Principles of Hospitality and Tourism • Students completing this course will receive ½ High School Credit. • Introductory course for students interested in pursing Culinary Arts and Hospitality and Tourism classes in high school.
Coed PE Students are required to take 2 semesters of PE credit during Middle School. (PE, Athletics, Cheer) Students who have not completed this requirement, must take PE during the 8th grade.
ATHLETICS Boys’ Athletics include football & off-season. Boys wanting to play: Only Basketball** - PEBB8A Only Golf**– PEGFBA Only Tennis** – PETNB **If you do NOT make the Boys’ or Girls' teams, you will be left in Coed PE. Girls’ Athletics include volleyball* & off-season. Girls wanting to play : Only Basketball** –PEBG8A Only Golf** – PEGFGA Only Tennis** – PETNGB

Sports Physicals • Sports physical paperwork should be given to the student’s coaches. • Sports physical forms and information are kept with the athletic department. Forms and information can also be found on the Allen ISD Athletic Department web page. • No one plays, practices , or try outs for a team without this!

Print child’s legal name (no nicknames) Print Parent/Guardian’s name Write Parent/Guardian’s phone number Mark your child’s choice for On-level or Pre-AP/IB for: Texas History, English, and Science. both boxes must be marked. Mark a TOTAL of 4 boxes from the Electives section. The Electives section is from Fine Arts through Advanced Technology. Do not mark 4 boxes from each Electives section. If the Elective has 2 boxes, both boxes must be marked. Write 2 Alternate Choices in order of preference. These should be different than the 4 boxes you marked in the Electives section. Parent/Guardian signs form. The back side of the form is a worksheet to help you. Students will make course selections based on the front side of the Course Selection Form.
