Study Tactics – The Sentence • Observations: Practice Ephesians 4:1-7 • 1) Repetition: words/phrases that are repeated • 2) Contrasts: differences - ideas, individuals, and/or items • 3) Comparisons: similarities - ideas, individuals, and/or items • 4) Lists: more than two items • 5) Cause and effect: may be more than one effect from a single cause • 6) Figures of Speech: expressions that convey images • 7) Conjunctions: terms that join units • 8) Verbs: past, present, future; active/passive; imperative • 9) Pronouns: identify the antecedent for each pronoun
Study Tactics – The Sentence • Observation • 8) Verbs – Where all the action is • Identify what kind of verb it is • Past, present, or future? • I went, I go, I will go? • Progressive (continued action) or Imperative? • I was going, I am going, I will be going or GO! • Ex.Ephesians 4:1-3 • Active vs Passive • Paul’s letters: Passive = God’s action, Active = Our action. Ex.Colossians 3:1
Study Tactics – The Paragraph • Paragraph Study: • 1) General & Specifics • Galatians 5:16 - But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. • Gal 5:19-21 = flesh, & Gal 5:22-23 = Spirit • 2) Q & A • Rhetorical question used to advance an argument • Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? • Answer - Romans 6:2-4 • Homework– Identify Questions in Mark 2:1 – 3:6
Study Tactics – The Paragraph • Paragraph Study: • 3) Dialogue • This may seem obvious that dialogue is going to be present in a narrative.But this does not mean we should simply read through it. • Stop and ask important questions • Who are the participants – who is speaking to who • Setting: Other people around? Are they active or passive participants? • Nature: argument, discussion, lecture, etc… • Emotional terms – Tone (ex. Gal 4:12-16) • Homework– Is there a dialogue in Mark 2:1 – 3:6?

Paul’s Preaching's – A study on how to share the gospel • Sermon to Gentiles : Acts 17:22-31 • Acts 17:18-19 Epicurean and Stoic • Epicurus (342–270 b.c.) taught that the purpose of life was pleasure and freedom from pain, passions, and fears. • Cypriot Zeno (340–265 b.c.), founder of Stoicism, stressed living in harmony with nature and depending on reason and other self-sufficient powers. • Pantheism • A doctrine identifying the Deity with the universe and its phenomena. • Belief in and worship of all gods. • Both schools stressed the quest for peace of mind.

Paul’s Preaching's – A study on how to share the gospel • Sermon to a King: Acts 26:1-29 • King Herod Agrippa II • Son of Agrippa I and great-grandson of Herod the Great • Herod the Great = ordered the killing of children in Bethlehem • Herod Agrippa I = persecuted the church (12:1–23), • Herod Agrippa II (a.d. 27–c. 100) had an intimate knowledge of Jewish matters. • Influential in Jewish religious affairs because he had political authority to appoint the high priest • Agrippa II was unpopular with the Jews because of his incestuous relationship with his sister Bernice

Paul’s Preaching's – A study on how to share the gospel • Speaking to the Crowd • Seize every opportunity • Pray to be open to opportunities: Acts 16 • 27 When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried with a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself, for we are all here.” 29 And the jailercalled for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house.
