The Assassination of the Archduke • assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, on 28 June 1914, • Ferdinand - and his wife Sophie - were killed by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip while on a formal visit to Sarajevo. Franz Ferdinand Gavrilo Princip
Why did Gavrilo assassinate the Archduke? • Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black Hand. • They did not want to be part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and they did not want to pay taxes to them. • Princip had tuberculosis and knew he was going to die soon. He assassinated the Archduke as a final act of "patriotism"
The rise of Nationalism • Around 1848-1914, the period of Nationalism began, • they wanted to expand their wealth around the world. • all gathered against Germany because of its great obsession with gaining power.
Military Alliances Entente Powers were the countries at war with the Central Powers during World War I. The key members of the Triple Entente were the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire
