Understanding the Purpose of both the Bread Miracles Mark 8:1-10; John 6:25-40
Mark 8:1 • In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,
Mark 8:2 Previously, Christ said: • I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:
Feeding of the 5000 Mark 6:34 • And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.
Mark 8:3 • And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
Tough Question If Christ has already fed 5000, why are the disciples asking the question found in Mark 8:4?
Mark 8:4 • And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?
This Question Has caused some to speculate as to whether there were actually two events as recorded by both Matthew and Mark, or is this a doublet?

Commentary • Mark’s probable motive for arranging his material in this manner was to show how the dullness of the disciples required that Jesus repeat His teaching and miracles before they could understand. • James A. Brooks

Mark 8:6 • And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.
Mark 8:7-8 • And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. • So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.
Mark 8:9 What was the point of both of these feeding miracles? • And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

Commentary on Mark Turn to John 6
John 6:1-13 Feeding of the 5000

John 6:33 Jesus Continues: • For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and givethlife unto the world.
