Napoleon’s Rise to Power • Some facts about the man… • Yes, he was 5’2”. • A French General at age 26. • Married Josephine de Beauharnais, a leader in French society, which allowed him greater mobility in France. • His genius was in his ability to move his troops rapidly to the critical points of the battlefield. • He was also very skillful politically, and had an extremely strong personality.
Taking Control of France Napoleon was leading the French troops in the late 1700s, and they were generally successful at holding off the Persians and Austrians. But Napoleon had been badly beaten by the British in Egypt. However, he returned home, hiding the truth and exaggerating stories of victory, and had strong support from the military. With support from revolutionary leaders and the military, Napoleon stages a coup d’etat, or a seizing of power by force, with the military.

How did he change France? • The ruler of France from 1799-1814. • He took a weak country and made it the most powerful in Europe. • Made new laws. • Won repeated military victories • Gives himself unlimited power.
Why was Napoleon successful? • Created the Napoleonic Code, which created unified laws for people of Europe to live under. • His military brilliance repeatedly conquered Austria, Prussia, and Spain. • France controls nearly all of Europe under his rule.
Other changes under Napoleon • Napoleon’s Concordat, or agreement with the pope, allows for religious freedom in France. • And brings an end to the religious turmoil that took place in the Revolution. • Many European countries agree to peace with France to avoid invasion.
