What is the Iowa Architectural Foundation? • Founded in 1989 as the only charitable organization to promote awareness and appreciation of architecture and design. • Receives financial support from grants, donations, and fundraising events and projects. • Is not affiliated with nor receives financial support from AIA National or AIA Iowa.

  3. Fulfillment of the Mission The Foundation strives to achieve its mission through three initiatives: • Public Awareness • Youth Education • Community Design

  4. Public Awareness In the past, the Foundation has • Sponsored architecturally-related shows on Iowa Public Television • Underwritten “The Planning of Iowa” conference series • Co-sponsored video project about Bengt von Rosen • Hosted public lectures

  5. Architecture @ Hand Walking Tours • FOR ADULTS • Nearly 800 residents and visitors have learned about downtown Des Moines’ architectural heritage since the program started in 2002.

  6. Architecture Month Lecture Series • Started in 2009 as lunch-time event to promote walking tours • Held every April to celebrate Iowa Architecture Month • Attendance has doubled • 2011 theme: Sacred Spaces • Previous topics included 100 Years of Iowa Architecture and Green 101: What is Green Architecture?

  7. Architecture Course for Adults • IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DSM COMMUNITY EDUCATION • New in 2011 • 3-part course: • Lecture • Walking tour • Exploration sessions

  8. Future Public Awareness Programs • Bicycle-based tour of downtown for Bike Iowa Month • Walking tours in May for attendees of the National Main Streets Conference • Dead Architects Society – a film series on past architects and their work

Youth Education In the past, the Foundation has • Provided curriculum guides and professional development workshops for educators • Offered career seminars and job shadowing • Partnered with the Des Moines Art Center in sponsoring “Ideal Object” • Conducted book drives But now the Foundation has developed programs to directly reach students……….

  10. Architecture @ Hand Walking Tours • FOR SCHOOL GROUPS • During 2009 and 2010, nearly 500 elementary school students were challenged during their one-hour tour to find eight different architectural elements.

ABC Drawing Contest • Launched in 2009 as statewide contest • Open to Iowa students in grades K-6 • Children explore architecture in their community by drawing their favorite public building • 2009 – 249 entries from 42 communities • 2010 – 465 entries from 67 communities • Marketing partnership with the Iowa Museum Association for 2011 contest

BUILD (Building Understanding of Iowa Landmarks through Discovery) • Unveiled at 2010 ArtFest Midwest. • Provides an interactive activity where children can build a 3-D model of an Iowa landmark. • American Gothic House • Barn • Covered Bridge • Schoolhouse • Little Brown Church • Jewel Box Bank

  18. Snapshot Iowa • Launched in 2011 • Open to Iowa students in grades 7-12 • Students explore architecture in their community through photography • Prize sponsors: • Des Moines Camera Club • Main Street Studio

  19. Community Design The Community Design Program helps rural communities by providing a transparent decision-making process that brings organizations, elected officials, and concerned citizens together with professional designers to visualize solutions for community betterment.

Volunteer Opportunities How emerging professionals and registered architects can get involved: • Serve in a leadership position (Board or committee level) • Help promote Foundation programs in your community • Serve as a lecturer during Iowa Architecture Month • Present ArKIDtec-Sure!at your local school or history museum • Lead walking tours for students or adults • Be a team member or leader on a CDP charrette • Volunteer for a shift during ArtsFest Midwest

  21. Why volunteer? IDP Credit • Interns can self-report their involvement with Foundation programs towards the 80 training hours required for Professional and Community Service. • IAF provides written verification to the intern.

  22. Why volunteer? AIA/CES Credit Walking tours: Self-report time spent on preparation or delivery of material as a tour guide, but not both. CDP: Self-report time during the charrette towards Research up to a 50-hour maximum. Does not count towards HSW. • Participation in a CDP charrette would earn enough units to fulfill the annual 18-unit requirement. • Team leaders can self-report time spent during a CDP site visit towards Research.

  23. Why volunteer? Maintain Iowa licensure The Iowa Architectural Examining Board requires registrants to participate in continuing education as a condition for license renewal. With a 2-year period, 24 contact hours must be acquired. Eight hours must be from “individually planned educational activities.” Volunteering for Foundation programs qualifies as “individually planned educational activities” as the programs allow the registrant to “advance the public’s understanding of the practice of architecture.”

  24. Why should I support the Foundation? • For Firm Principals: • Teaching awareness of the built environment now will create a generation of future clients. • Aware citizens will expand your potential client base. • Your employees can earn IDP and or AIA/CES hours. • Future clients are impressed and attracted to your firm due to your corporate philanthropy. • Tax deductibility of your corporate donation. • For Emerging Professionals and/or Registered Architects: • Opportunity to share your expertise and passion for design with your community. • With an enlightened public, your work will be appreciated and not taken for granted. • Earn IDP and/or continuing education hours by volunteering. • Tax deductibility of your individual cash donation.
