Global & Local Winds Chapter 15 Section 2
Bellringer • What causes winds? • If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why?
Bellringer • What causes winds? Winds are caused by the unequal heating of the Earth’s surface, which causes pressure differences. • If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why?
Bellringer • If you open the valve on a bicycle tube, what happens? Why? The air rushes out. The air inside the tube is at a higher pressure than the air is outside the tube. Letting air out of the tube creates wind.
Global & Local Winds • Explainthe relationship between air pressure and wind direction. • Describe global wind patterns. • Explain the causes of local wind patterns.
Wind • The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure.
Global Winds • A combination of convection cells found at every 30 degrees latitude & Coriolis Effect produces patterns of air circulation.
Local Winds • Moves short distances & can blow from any direction. • Geographic Features: • Shorelines • Mountains • These can produce temperature differences that cause local winds
