The East Between the Wars • BIG Idea: After WWI, many colonies sought independence from imperial Europe.
Conflict in Palestine • Ruled by Britain after WWI. • Jews, facing anti-Semitism in Europe, were promised a homeland. • Biblical connections to Jerusalem. • Arabs, the vast majority, were promised independence for their help in WWI.
Militarism in Japan • Industrial growth led to imperialism. • Needed raw materials from abroad. • During the Great Depression, many supported strong military leaders. • Army invaded Manchuria (Northeast China) without gov. approval.
Anti-Western sentiment • Causes • 1924 U.S. banned Japanese immigration • Racism at the Treaty of Versailles • West refused to recognized Japanese interests in China
India’s Struggle for Independence • Despite promising post-WWI self-rule for India, Britain maintained repressive rule. • Amritsar Massacre: 400 unarmed Indians murdered by British troops. • Hindu/Muslim mistrust hindered a united independence movement.
Mohandas Gandhi • Indian Nationalist Leader • Pacifist: opposed to violence • Civil disobedience: refusal to obey unjust laws.
Satyagraha: “Truth-force” nonviolent protest. • Boycotted British cloth & salt tax.
