About AIDSVu Partnership since 2010 between Gilead Sciences & Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health Mission to make HIV data widely available, easily accessible & locally relevant to inform public health decision making Interactive online mapping tool to visualize the U.S. HIV epidemic at state-, county- & ZIP code-level

  5. Understanding HIV Where You Live • Interactive maps displaying latest CDC data on HIV prevalence, new diagnoses & mortality • County-level for 48 states • ZIP code-level for 41 cities, which collectively represent over 60% of U.S. HIV epidemic

  7. PrEP Data Launch • This week, AIDSVu released the first-ever state-level data and interactive maps of PrEP users and rate of PrEP use (”PrEP Prevalence”) • Dataset developed from proprietary national database of pharmacy data

  8. Why Increasing PrEP Use Is Important

  9. PrEP Data Available • State-level maps and datasets available, including: • PrEP users and Rate of PrEP use (“PrEP Prevalence”) • Yearly data 2012 to 2016 • Overall, by sex, and by age • Available alongside social determinants of health

Data Source First of its kind data release agreement: Obtained from Source Healthcare Analytics, LLC with the support of Gilead Sciences, Inc., and compiled by researchers at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University • Open sample of commercially available data from over 54,000 pharmacies, 1,500 hospitals, 800 outpatient facilities, and 80,000 physician practices across the U.S., which excludes entities that do not make their data available, such as closed healthcare systems and entities that choose not to share their data with SHA • Dataset contains prescription, medical, and hospital claims data for all payment types, including commercial plans, Medicare Part D, cash, assistance programs, and Medicaid • Data are de-identified and linked to confirmatory data from a de-identified medical insurance claims database • Validated algorithm excludes use for HIV treatment, post-exposure prophylaxis, and off-label treatment of chronic Hepatitis B

Other Publicly Shared Data • AIDSVu: • PrEP Users or Rate of PrEP Use (“PrEP Prevalence”) • The number of unique persons who had at least one day of prescribed oral TDF/FTC for PrEP in a year from 2012 to 2016. Minimum duration of 30 days was required for an individual to be considered a PrEP user. • Other data sources: • PrEP Starts: Cumulative number of unique persons who have started TDF/FTC for PrEP since 2012 • Total PrEP Users: Estimated total number of unique persons using PrEP across the U.S. at a given point in time

Data Limitations Data are not available from closed healthcare systems and those that choose not to share their data with SHA   Not all prescriptions are included resulting in under-estimates Data are derived from prescriptions to unique people; those who fill a prescription may not use it The overall total population may be fewer than the sum of age group total population for a given year PrEP data are not available for race/ethnicity

  20. Overall PrEP Users The number of PrEP users has increased by 880% since 2012, an average 73 percent increase year over year from 2012 to 2016 In 2016, there were 77,120 (28.2 per 100,000 people) PrEP users in the U.S., up from 8,768 (3.3 per 100,000 people) in 2012

PrEP by Sex PrEP use among males has increased at a much faster rate than among females 93 percent of all PrEP users in 2016 were male (71,977) Number of male PrEP users increased 95% year over year since 2012 The rate of PrEP use was more than 14x higher for men (53.9 per 100,000) than women (3.7 per 100,000) in 2016

  22. PrEP by Age Of all age groups, 25 to 44 year olds have the highest rates of PrEP use The rate of PrEP use among 25 to 34 year olds increased year over year by nearly 80% from 2012 to 2016, followed by 78% among 35- to 44- year olds

PrEP by Region The South has the highest number of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. but has disproportionately fewer people using PrEP The Southern U.S. accounted for only 30 percent (23,091) of all PrEP users in 2016. The region represented more than half (52 percent) of all new HIV diagnoses in 2016.
