Prayer III Paul Chang Abraham Moon David Park
Praying the Ordinary • Where is God? • Our vocation is an asset to prayer. • Waiting is part of ordinary time.
Petitionary Prayer • Petition or Intercession. • Petition is not a lower form of prayer. • Why should we ask God for things when he already knows our needs? • Nothing is more important to him than the anxiety we feel over our problems. • God does not answer all the time. • Does God never hear a sinner’s prayer?
Intercessory Prayer • Intercessory Prayer is priestly ministry. • We pray in the name of Jesus. • Organized, Corporate, Intercessory Prayer • We begin with prayer for our enemies. • Prayer is a way of loving others.
HEALING PRAYER • God employs an infinite variety of means to bring health and well being to his people. • Begin to pray for small things. • What about the fact that not everyone who receives prayer is healed?
THE PRAYER OF SUFFERING • “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34) • Joy, not misery, is the compelling energy behind redemptive suffering. • “We are more than conquerors” (Rom 8:35-39) • Moses stood between God and the people, arguing with God to withhold his hand of judgment. (Exod. 32:30b, 32) • Endure and Fight. • As our sufferings are his, so his sufferings are ours.
Prayer of Intercession (Pray effectively for others) Speaks (listen) God Intercessor Others Talks • Get in contact with God: tuned in to God on regular, daily basis. trained to listen (God often speaks in ideas, visions, words, voices, events through his Spirit in us) • Listen for guidance: seek the signs of the divine authorization. (Compassion, Compulsion to intercede, Assurance of rightness, Flow of the Spirit) • Begin praying for others with an expectation: God’s life and power flow through us into others. • Change the whole atmosphere of a home, school, church, community and nation: constantly throw a cloak of prayer around everyone in our cycle of nearness. God Authorizes (listen) Intercessor Others Seeks Guidance God God’s life, power Intercessor Others God’s life, power Change occurs Pray with openness, honesty, trust, intimacy, imagination (picture what will actually happen) Intercessor Everyone we meet today Pray for Congregation Pastors Pray against Teachers Students Spouses, Children The world The flesh The devil
