Even though Mario Booker currently teaches at the elementary school level—he’s a fifth-grade teacher at Longwood Charter Schools in Chicago, one of his many stops as a Chicago educator, he still provides support for student-athletes. Booker is a volunteer Assistant Coach for the fifth and sixth grade boys basketball team at his school and helps his players prepare for success on and off the court. Booker has been teaching in Chicago for over fourteen years and has been known for his success in the classroom and in helping people outside the classroom succeed in life.

3. Mario Booker helps kids balance their school and athletic lives. While only the most talented middle schoolers in the country—some of them in Chicago—are looked at as serious recruits for college programs, all of the athletes on his team have to make the same sacrifices to stay on the team and earn their place. They all have to make sure to keep their academics straight or face getting cut from the team, and they all have to work hard to keep their lives properly balanced. For some of them who will move on to play basketball at the collegiate level, they will have to grapple with this for many years. No matter what the future has in store for everyone on the team, they will all have to balance different aspects of their lives as they mature.

4. Mario Booker loves supporting the student-athletes on his team and in his school and gives them the encouragement they need to be successful on and off the court.
