  2. What is 7th grade math like in the common core? Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  3. Our observations Students are expected to read and understand large amounts of text. All students are now expected to solve problems that were previously reserved for higher achieving students only. All students are expected to “power through” problems and not give up. Perseverance is key!

Examples From Each Class • CC 7— Given a 3.5 cm by 5.2 cm by 8.3 cm prism and a cylinder with a diameter of 6.7 cm and a height of 4.2 cm, evaluate which 3-d object maximizes volume with a minimum amount of surface area. • Adv. CC 7— An aquarium is a rectangular prism and is filled to the top with water. It measures 15.4 in x 3.75 ft x 26.7 cm. 1.8 deciliters of water is removed from the top of the tank and a cone shaped volcano with a height of 12.3 inches and a radius of 4.8 cm is then added to the tank. How high is water in the tank in miles? Round to the nearest ten thousandth of a mile.

  11. Examples From Each Class • CC 7 — A pair of jeans that costs $97.50 and is discounted 25% & has an additional discount of 10% taken off at register. Sales tax is 7.25%. If the salesperson gets 5% of the sale, how much commission does the salesperson get? • Adv. CC 7 — in addition to the problem above… Another pair of jeans costs the same and has the same discounts as the one above except it is in a city that is 32 miles away. If gas costs $3.68 per gallon and your car gets 18 mpg, and you live 17 kilometers from the first location, which store would you rather work at considering that you sell on average 8 pairs of jeans per shift?

  13. Examples From Each Class CC 7 — You are vacationing with your friends from September 3rd through the 8th. Your trip is 500 miles each way. If you can travel 35 kilometers in 47 minutes? How far does your car travel in miles in 12 seconds? Adv. CC 7— Gina left the mall and traveled to her house at an average speed of 34 km/hr. Frank left at the same time and traveled in the opposite direction with an average speed of 40 mi/hr. Find the time it takes in seconds for Frank to travel before they are 59,400 meters apart.
