  1. Mathematics at Learwood Common Core Implementation

  2. What is 7th grade math like in the common core? Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  3. Our observations Students are expected to read and understand large amounts of text. All students are now expected to solve problems that were previously reserved for higher achieving students only. All students are expected to “power through” problems and not give up. Perseverance is key!

  4. Changes at Learwood 5 classes 5 classes 2 classes Pre-algebra Math 7 Previous years Adv. Pre-algebra 9 classes 3 classes Common core 7 Adv. Common core 7 Next year

  5. Similarities between classes Rigor Performance task assessments (link) High expectations

  6. Common Core 7 Challenging content mandated by state 8th grade textbook (reference) Highly supplemented (teacher created materials) More abstract

  7. Advanced Common Core 7 Highly supplemented Abstract concepts Concepts reach through 11th grade Higher level of rigor

  8. Placement Criteria used for placement Example problems for each class

  9. Criteria Used OAA math Terra Nova math Terra Nova CSI Algebra Readiness Test IAAT* Learwood Placement Test* 6th grade teacher recommendation

  10. Examples From Each Class • CC 7— Given a 3.5 cm by 5.2 cm by 8.3 cm prism and a cylinder with a diameter of 6.7 cm and a height of 4.2 cm, evaluate which 3-d object maximizes volume with a minimum amount of surface area. • Adv. CC 7— An aquarium is a rectangular prism and is filled to the top with water. It measures 15.4 in x 3.75 ft x 26.7 cm. 1.8 deciliters of water is removed from the top of the tank and a cone shaped volcano with a height of 12.3 inches and a radius of 4.8 cm is then added to the tank. How high is water in the tank in miles? Round to the nearest ten thousandth of a mile.

  11. Examples From Each Class • CC 7 — A pair of jeans that costs $97.50 and is discounted 25% & has an additional discount of 10% taken off at register. Sales tax is 7.25%. If the salesperson gets 5% of the sale, how much commission does the salesperson get? • Adv. CC 7 — in addition to the problem above… Another pair of jeans costs the same and has the same discounts as the one above except it is in a city that is 32 miles away. If gas costs $3.68 per gallon and your car gets 18 mpg, and you live 17 kilometers from the first location, which store would you rather work at considering that you sell on average 8 pairs of jeans per shift?

  12. Examples From Each Class CC 7 —Judy opens a savings account by depositing $1200 in an account that earns .8% interest. How much will her investment be worth in 38 months? Adv. CC 7— Judy opens a savings account by depositing $1200 in an account that earns .3% interest compounded monthly. How much will her investment be worth in 54 months?

  13. Examples From Each Class CC 7 — You are vacationing with your friends from September 3rd through the 8th. Your trip is 500 miles each way. If you can travel 35 kilometers in 47 minutes? How far does your car travel in miles in 12 seconds? Adv. CC 7— Gina left the mall and traveled to her house at an average speed of 34 km/hr. Frank left at the same time and traveled in the opposite direction with an average speed of 40 mi/hr. Find the time it takes in seconds for Frank to travel before they are 59,400 meters apart.

  14. Examples From Each Class CC 7 — Amanda has a recipe that calls for ¾ teaspoon of butter for every ½ cup of milk. If Amanda increased the amount of milk to 2 ¾ cups, how much butter would she need? This leads to the proportion Adv. CC 7 —
