God knows how important food is. How did God feed his people in the past? • He sent quail and manna to the Israelites in the desert • He multiplied bread and fish for the crowds who listened to him teach
Relating to Us • Just as Jesus saved the Israelites with miraculous food, he also saves us through the Eucharist. • Just as Jesus fed all those who were there to listen to him teach, Jesus feeds us at Mass, where we have gathered to hear his teaching.
Paschal Mystery • In the Old Testament, we read that God sent plagues upon Egypt to punish the pharaoh for not letting the Israelites leave. The greatest and most fearsome plague was when the angel of death passed over. • The Israelites were saved from the angel of death when they sacrificed a lamb and put the blood of the lamb on their doorposts. This lamb is called the paschal lamb. • This event is what the Jewish people celebrate during the feast of Passover. They celebrate the niht the angel of death passed over the Israelites.
Paschal Mystery • Jesus celebrated Passover on the night before he died. When he did, he changed the celebration. • Jesus became the sacrifice; he became the paschal lamb. • Jesus is the paschal lamb who saved us from sin and death by his passing through death to a risen life.
What does the Paschal Mystery include? • Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension
In the Eucharistic celebration we enter into the Paschal Mystery as we pass from sin to new life in Jesus. • Underline the last sentence of the second paragraph. • Read it aloud. • This sentence is important because it reminds us how important the Eucharist is. • The Eucharist is the most wonderful sacrament of all because we receive Jesus himself.

Why do we celebrate the Eucharist? • Because Jesus told us, “Do this in memory of me.”
What does Jesus offer the Father at every Mass? • The sacrifice of himself on the cross • The mass is the same sacrifice that Jesus offered at the Last Supper and that he offered on Calvary the next day.
Who is present in the Eucharist? • The risen Jesus • We say Real Presence because Jesus is really present under the form of bread and wine. In the Eucharist, not only his Body and Blood are present, but his soul and divinity are too.
Jesus is primarily present in the consecrated bread and wine. In what other ways is Jesus present at Mass? • In his Word • In his priest • In his people
To whom are we united when we receive Communion? • Jesus • The Father • The Holy Spirit • All the people who share the meal with us
Create a list: • Write at least five things the Eucharist does for us.
In Holy Communion, Jesus comes to nourish us and to give us strength so that we can become more like him. • Because we commit sin, we need Jesus’ forgiveness. We need his strength to overcome temptation in the future and to live according to God’s commandments. • To become like Jesus, we need to be strengthened by his love. It is not always easy to be loving and kind. We need Jesus to help us forgive others and love them. • It is not easy to suffer and make sacrifices, as Jesus did. We need the love of Jesus to do this. • Jesus helps us in all these needs in the Holy Communion. He invites us to receive him often, even daily, because he loves us.
Why is it fitting that an altar is used for the Eucharist? • The altar is a table; the Eucharist is a meal. • Sacrifices in the past were offered on altars; the Eucharist is a sacrifice.
How do we prepare our hearts? • By desiring to receive Jesus • By being loving to others • By keeping free from sin
Why can’t people who have committed a mortal sin receive Communion? • They have separated themselves from God and the Church. • Sin is a deliberate and free choice to think, say, or do something we know offends God. Freely and knowingly choosing something that is seriously wrong is called mortal sin.
Mortal sin: • A choice to live apart from God • If we have committed a mortal sin, we must confess it in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive Holy Communion.

Nourishing foods cannot help our bodies if we’ve filled ourselves with junk food. • Jesus also cannot nourish us as he wants to if our minds and hearts are filled with things that are not good. • The fastin we do before Holy Communion reminds us to get our hearts ready for Jesus.
